Ashe, 48, said he had wanted to
have privacy because he was not
running for office or heading a
company whose stockholders de
pended on him. He spoke with
emotion, and at one point his wife.
Jeanne, had to take over reading
his statement.
He said: "I am not sick. I can
function very well. And I plan to
continue doing those things that I
have done all along, if the public
will let me. My wife and daughter
are in good health and botn are
HIV negative."
He said he would work to
teach others about AIDS and said
he was inspired by Johnson's
work.
Ashe's heart operations in 1979
and 1983 occurred before testing
of blood for the AIDS virus made
blood transfusions safer.
Dr. John E. Hutchinson, direc
tor of cardiac surgery at St. Luke's
Hospital in New York City when
Ashe underwent both operations
there, said he would check with
the hospital to see whether blood
products were used in either oper
ation.

may be no more than a false sig
nal," said Charles Batten, head of
the operations group of NTSB. "It
may also be many other things,
which we are looking into. We
will be looking into Seminole
records as well."
Batten said other valves be

"Had that valve moved, there
were other valves between that
valve and the cavern that were
closed," Batten said. "It could be
a malfunction of the detection

money available to help these
people to rebuild their homes,"
Morgan said.
"There will also be money
available through other
sources."
Morgan said she was not sur
prised by Laundy's decision.
"I personally did not think
we would get the aid," she said.
"We had a major disaster —
and he agreed it was a disaster
— but FEMA only helps if peo
ple have no other coverage."
Morgan said the Red Cross
would coordinate and distribute
any aid from outside organiza
tions or individuals.
Wesley resident Darlene
Konieczny, 37, said insurance
will pay for repairs to her dam
aged home eventually, but she is
not sure what to do in the mean
time.
"We want to know what
they're going to do about
putting us up,' Konieczny said.
"We have no place to live."
Konieczny said she felt Semi
nole Pipeline Co., the company
that owns the salt dome facility,
has not dealt properly with the
situation.
"Nobody contacted us,"
Konieczny said. "They should
have come to us and asked what
they could do to help us, but no
one has."
With or without immediate
aid, Konieczny said she feels
lucky to be alive.
"I looked down the road to
ward the explosion and I saw
what could have happened,"
she said. "We'll make it. I've
never been a quitter."
