The Timberwolves won their

Mavericks, 104-95 on Friday
night.
"Down the road we know
we're going to be better," said
Timberwolves forward Tony
Campbell, who came off the
bencn to score 16 points. "But
you need to win a game every
once in a while to build some
thing for next year. We've been
I struggling, but we feel we're a

DENVER (AP) - Terry Cum
mings scored 24 points as San An
tonio handed Denver its seventh
straight loss, 90-87 on Sunday.
Denver cut an 11-point deficit
to 73-72 at the end of three peri
ods, and then opened the final
quarter with a 7-0
run to take a 79-73
lead. But San An
tonio countered
with an 11-1 burst
to take an 84-80
lead with 3:53 re
maining.
Reggie Williams' 3-pointer for
Denver closed the gap to 84-83
with 3:05 left. After a pair of free
throws by each team, Sean Elliott
hit a 17-foot jumper to give the
Spurs an 88-85 advantage.
Trailing 88-87, Denver re
bounded a San Antonio miss and
called timeout with 23.9 seconds
remaining. But the Nuggets
couldn't score.
They tried to inbound the ball
with ten seconds left and only two
seconds remaining on the shot

clock. But Mark Macon couldn't
get the ball inbounds in five sec
onds and the ball went to San An
tonio.
After Sidney Green hit two
free throws for the Spurs, Denver
had a last chance with 4.7 seconds
left. But Todd
Lichte's attempt
to inbound a pass
bounced off El
liott as time ran
out.
Williams led
all scorers with 25
points. Elliott had 18 for the Spurs
and Macon scored 17 for Denver.
The Nuggets hit only three of
17 shots in the fourth quarter,
while the Spurs made only six of
16.
"We didn't play as well as we
are capable, but we still played
well enough to win," Cummings
said. "Our defense in that fourth
quarter is what turned it around
for us. We forced a lot of tough
shots even though they made
some of them/'
