Hike for charity symbolizes passing of rank
within Corps of Cadets, spokesman says
Spade Phillips, Rl.

$60,000. The official total and
awards will be presented during
Parent's Weekend.
The march also symbolizes the
passing of ranks within the Corps,
said Jim Shelton, public relations
chairman for the March to the Bra
zos Committee.
"It is used to pass down staff
and outfit positions," he said. "Se
niors don't march back with the
Corps. It is a chance for the juniors
to take over."
, The seven-mile hike on High
way 60 from campus to the river
began at 8 a.m.
Once at the river, about 1,700
cadets participated in field events
like relay races and tug-of-war.
In addition, the Rudder's
Rangers unit simulated battles, the
Confederate Air Force gave an
aerial performance and the Aggies
Over Texas performed parachute
jumps.
"Everything went really well
this year," Shelton said. "The
committee really appreciates the
support the community gave us
both through financial donations
and prize incentives."

Volunteers race to get Perot on ballot
WASHINGTON (AP) - From
coast to coast, an enthusiastic vol
unteer army is on the march to get
Texas billionaire Ross Perot on the
residential
£
Perot
jallot in
November.
Judging by
early reports
from recruits,
the goal may
be met in short
order.
"It's a wild
fire," said or-
g a n i z e r
Michele Kubek
of Anchorage,
Alaska, who expects to round up
the more than 2,000 signatures her
state requires in a matter of days.
"The phone rang all day yester
day" with questions about Perot,
said Patsy Casey, a worker in the
secretary of state's office in Ken
tucky. In Las Vegas, an organizer
reported gathering 300 signatures
on a busy street comer in just two
hours.
Interviews by The Associated
Press with election officials and
volunteers in all 50 states over the
past week show that response to a
prospective Perot candidacy has
been swift and overwhelming.
Perot, with a net worth of over
$2 billion, started the ball rolling
last month by saying he would
run as an independent if people
could get his name on the ballot in
all 50 states.
With the outspoken industrial
ist and his employees prodding
the process from Dallas — and
with the help of a high-tech 800-
number — the Perot petition effort
has been barrelling along.
"This has been the most incred
ible groundswell — just ordinary
folks coming out of the wood
work," said Barbara LeBey, a for
mer Georgia judge who is an At
lanta organizer.
Perot needs 27,000 signatures
by July 14 to get on Georgia's bal
lot. Organizers say they will shoot
for 60,000 just to be safe.
The Texas industrialist says if
he runs, he will foot the bill him
self — and is prepared to spend
$100 million — making a Perot
candidacy unparalleled.
"Any time someone can spend
$100 million on a campaign and is
and se
play, tb
worth $2 billion, damn t;:
you're concerned," saidWilti w ho~le.
Ulrey, executive directorofi j a

"This is the first timeur

the wherewithal to mountase
ous campaign for the president
said Ted Thomas, owner ofafa
land. Ore., computer sofa
company, who is puttingink
hours to get Perot on hisstii
ballot.
Thomas says it will notbete
to collect the necessary 34,00(li
natures by an August 25 deaf
"There's a tremendous amomli
interest in this," he said.
In the past three weeks, 1.5ei|
lion people have called theF;

Voters boost far-rightists
in German elections
STUTTGART, Germany (AP)
— Voters in two states gave
strong boosts to extreme right
ists Sunday after legislative
campaigns that focused on Ger
many's growing immigrant
population.
Chancellor Helmut Kohl's
Christian Democrats lost their
absolute control of the south
west state of Baden-Wuerttem-
berg, but the makeup of a gov
erning coalition was unclear.
No combination of parties
with the necessary majority of
the 146-seat parliament was im
mediately evident.
In the northern state of
Schleswig-Holstein, the govern
ing Social Democrats barely
held onto their majority in par
liament.
In both states, right-wing
parties finished third, behind
either the conservative Chris
tian Democrats or the left-lean
ing Social Democrats.
The results were based on an
official count of all votes cast in
the two states. A final count
will be released in a few days,
although it was not expected to
differ.
Kohl's party took 39 percent
of the Baden-Wuerttemberg
vote, compared to 49 percent in
the last elections in 1988, the re
sults showed.
The Social Democrats fin
ished second with 29 percent
compared to 32 percent four
years ago.
The far-right Republicans,
who campaigned on a strong
anti-foreigner platform that
blamed immigrants for housing
shortages, budget problems, in
flation, crime and growing job
lessness, came in third.
They won nearly 11 percent
of the vote.
Four years ago, the Republi
cans won only 1 percent, and
national opinion polls usually
give the far right only 2 percent
support.
Parties must have 5 percent
of the vote for parliamentary
representation.
