Republics violate cease-fire
Armenia blames Azerbaijan for expanding battle over land

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) — Ar
menia on Sunday accused Azer
baijan of trying to expand the bat
tle over Nagorno-Karabakh by
lobbing shells over the border be
tween the republics.
But Azerbaijan blamed the
newest truce violations on Arme
nia.
Azerbaijanis and Armenians
have fought for four years over
Nagorno-Karabakh, but the fight
ing escalated sharply after the
breakup of the Soviet Union.
On Sunday, both republics re
ported heavy overnight shelling of
villages along both sides of the
border.
The fighting came despite a
cease-fire agreed to last week.
Nagorno-Karabakh is a pre
dominantly Christian Armenian
enclave situated inside Azerbai
jan. More than 1,000 people have
died in the conflict.
Aram Avayan of the Armenian
National Security Service said
Sunday the cross-border shelling
was initiated by Azerbaijan and
targeted at the villages of
Voskepar and Artnaker in the
Naimberyan region. He described
the shelling as "massive" and last
ing through the night.
Avayan accused Azerbaijan of
attempting to draw Armenia into
a cross-border conflict. "The
Naimberyan shelling is proof of
this," he said.
Azerbaijan, in turn, accused
Armenia of breaching the truce. Il
dar Memedi, a spokesman for the
Azerbaijani Popular Front, said
four people were killed and six
were wounded in the shelling of
three villages in the northwestern
Kazakh region of the republic.
