Residents discuss recycling
Continued from Page 1
fore a state hearing takes place .
Dr. Roy Hartman, associate
professor of engineering technolo
gy at Texas A&M, said the United
States accounts for 6 percent of the
world's population and 48 percent
of the world's waste.
"We have had this 'throw it
away ethic'," Hartman said.
"There is no 'away'. Away is
someone else's back yard and we
need to come to grips with that."
Hartman said the problem is
that there is a very small market
for recycled products.
"Recycling without proper
markets is only collecting," he
said. "We need to have new mar
kets for the materials."
Paul Fagan, director of Junction
505, a non-profit organization that
employs people with disabilities
for recycling projects, agreed there
are not enough markets for recy
cled products.
"Our problems are the mar
kets," Fagan said. "We are very
limited here. Our job is to take
products from the raw state and
find markets for them and it has
not been that easy."
Hartman asked people to edu
cate themselves about recycling
and the its benefits.
"The key obstacle is educa
tion," he said. "We are all a part
of the problem, so we are all, by
necessity, a part of the solution."
