Never spring break
without basketball
"But then the weather didn't real
ly matter if it's raining or not be
cause you just want to do what
you want to do.
"Miami had the glitz and the
glitter image at that time; it was a
show-town, I guess," Barone says.
Rethinking his answer, Barone
says he does not know if Miami
was really all that interesting. He
says the big deal about that spring
break was that he, Lewis and
Kennedy became more than col
lege roommates.
"We really became friends," he
said. "We were quite a group. We
did it as an adventure. It wasn't
really a vacation. We kind of
hung around Miami and tried to
make-believe that we belong
there."
The trip home for the trio was
disastrous. They started to hitch
hike back to school and could not
get a ride for more than 50 miles
or 100 miles at a time.
In the end. Greyhound bus was
the answer.
"Riding the bus was a spring
vacation in itself," Barone says.
"The bus stopped in every small

town between Miami and North
Carolina. It ended up taking us
about two days because of all
stops and transferring buses.
"It was the kind of vacation
where you need a break when
you come back to get over the
break you just had," he says.
The relationship that the three
teammates developed was very
close, Barone says. And he still
considers them his best friends to
day.
Kennedy is an administrator
for four technical colleges in the
Virginia Beach area. And Lewisis
an executive with a paper comp*
ny in North Carolina.
This spring break, Barone
hopes that the A&M men's bas
ketball team still will be playing
in the Southwest Conference bas
ketball tournament. Otherwise,
Barone will spend spring break
recruiting.
