Latin American epidemic reaches U.S
Travelers, immigrants transport contagious cholera virus across bordei
LOS ANGELES (AP) - While a
cholera epidemic in Latin America
is unlikely to spread to the United
States, health officials expect spo
radic outbreaks of the disease
borne by travelers, immigrants
and imported food.
“We are not expecting a huge
increase. We do expect some cases
because of people traveling in and
out of epidemic areas," said Dr.
Due Vugia, an epidemiologist at
the Centers for Disease Control in
Atlanta.
The latest U.S. outbreak began
Feb. 14 when at least 76 people —
including 71 Americans — got the
diarrhea-causing, bacterial disease
on an Aerolineas Argentinas flight
from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to
Los Angeles, with a stopover in
Lima, Peru.
Investigators said Friday that
cold seafood salad from a caterer
in the Peruvian capital was the
most likely cause of the outbreak
on Flight 386, which carried 356
passengers and crew members.
The caterer earlier denied respon
sibility.
The outbreak put the number
of U.S. cholera infections so far
this year well above the 26 cases
reported during 1991 which was
the highest reported in the U.S. in
years.
Most of last year's cases were
imported by travelers infected in
Latin America or who brought
home tainted food, Vugia said.
A cholera pandemic — or glob
al epidemic — reached Latin
America in January 1991. It struck
Peru first, then spread through the
region. Nearly 400,000 people
have become sick, and almost
4,000 have died.
Travel between the United
States and Latin America will lead
to more sporadic cases here, as
will occasional imports of tainted
food, experts said.
“There's no way to stop it at
the border," said Dr. Ben Warner,
chief of the general infectious dis
ease unit at California's Depart
ment of Health Services in Berke
ley.
Cholera is almost always
spread by contaminated water or
food, especially raw or under
cooked fish and shellfish. Infected
restaurant workers also can
spread the disease by failing to
wash their hands after defecating,
then handling food, Vugia said.
But U.S. restaurant hygiene is
generally good. Drinking water
and sewage are disinfected, and
cholera bacteria are difficult to
transmit in numbers large enough
to cause illness. So most infected
people entering the United States
will not spread cholera to anyone
else, experts said.
In fact, not a single imported
case of cholera has been transit
ted to another person in the Unit
ed States in recent decades, W®
er said.
“So the chance cholera will tali
off in great numbers in metropd
tan areas is very remote," he said
If cholera ever does spreai
from a person who imports ittt
others in the United States, sue!
outbreaks most likely would ha[
pen “in shantytowns, migrai:
camps and any place when
sewage comes in contact will
food or drinking water," sad
Scott Lewis, a state health depan
ment spokesman.
Cholera usually causes
symptoms or mild diarrhea,
severe untreated cases can leadt
fatal dehydration within houii
The disease is easily treated wit
fluids and antibiotics.

Police arrest militant Jewish leader
Officers search for second suspect in alleged murder-for-hire plot
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The
chairman of the militant Jewish
Defense League, Irv Rubin, was in
jail Saturday in an alleged mur
der-for-hire plot, and police said
they were searching for a second
suspect.
Rubin, 46, was arrested Friday
night as he left a restaurant, said
police spokesman Mike Schwehr.
Details of the alleged conspira
cy were withheld pending a sec
ond arrest, Schwehr said. It
stemmed from an incident in San
Pedro, about 30 miles south of Los
Angeles.
Rubin, from Monrovia near
Los Angeles, denied involvement
in a murder plot, said his attorney,
Steven Goldberg. Rubin was held
without bail.
“He has no idea where they're
coming from or what they're
based on. He does not know who
the alleged victim is supposed to
be/' Goldberg said.
In 1985, Rubin succeeded Meir
Kahane as league chairman when
the group splintered into the Los
Angeles-based Jewish Defense
League and the New York-based
Jewish Defense Organization.
Goldberg said police told him
the allegations did not involve the
JDL.
The league has advocated use
of violence in the Arab-Israeli con
flict. It was founded in the early
1960s by Kahane, who was mur
dered in New York on Nov. 5,
1990.
League members regularly
protest speeches by leaders they
consider anti-Semitic.
An Egyptian-born Muslim was
acquitted of murder in Kahane's
slaying but convicted of wound
ing two men as he fled the scene.
