Russia removes limits
on oil product prices
MOSCOW (AP) - Russia said
Monday that domestic price
controls will be lifted on oil and
oil products and a 50 percent tax
imposed on them as the nation
moves closer to full membership
in the International Monetary
Fund.
The measures, which will
sharply add to the soaring cost of
living since economic reforms
were enacted here two months
ago, are to go into effect April 15,
said the Tass news agency,
quoting unidentified sources.
Russia needs to carry out such
measures to become a full
member of the IMF, making it
eligible for international loans and
investment.
The reforms also are intended
to increase government revenues
and help lower Russia's budget
deficit, said Konstantin
Kagalovsky, a government
adviser on international financial
organizations.
Tass predicted crude oil prices
would rise 500 percent to 700
percent.
Prices for most other goods
and services have risen an average
of 300 percent since January.

jor assets in leading the nation
into the future.
Because of the many different
factors undermining the
American moral character, it was
important that the first family be a
positive example.
"My dad and mom are
wonderful people to be around,
because they understand what's
important in life," he said. "Their
fundamental values of faith and
family far outweigh the trappings
of office.
"When it comes time for
people to go into that booth and
vote, they're going to think about
that solid example George and
Barbara Bush have set for
generations of people to come,"
Bush said.
"It makes sense to have a first
lady and president in the White
House with their feet solidly on
the ground, and I can think of no
better family than my parents."
