Bird's return marks Dallas' demise, 101-91
BOSTON (AP) - Larry Bird
had 26 points, 13 rebounds and
nine assists in a spectacular return
from a two-month layoff, leading
the Boston Celtics to a 101-91 vic
tory over the Dallas Mavericks on
Sunday night.
Sidelined with an inflamed
nerve in the lower back since Dec.
30, Bird played 34 minutes, in
cluding the entire third period,
hitting nine of 16 field-goal at
tempts and all seven of his free
throw attempts.
The 35-year-old veteran took
charge in the third period, spark
ing the Celtics to just their fourth
victory in 12 games. He had seven
points, seven rebounds and five
assists in the quarter, then re
turned briefly in the final period,
narrowly missing his first triple
double.
Boston broke away from a 59-
59 tie in the decisive third period,
outscoring the Mavericks 19-9 to
take a a 78-68 advantage into the
final quarter.
Given a standing ovation
when introduced. Bird threw up a
brick on his first shot from 18 feet,
but quickly settled down. He
scored seven points, including a 3-
pointer, while playing eight min
utes and helping Boston to a 21-21
first period tie.
"We played well in the begin
ning of the game, but toward the
end of the first half, we started los
ing it a little and let them backin
it," she said.
"They were playing some
matchup zones in the second
that we had trouble with, and its
disappointing for the kids to see
them work so hard and not get the
win. If you shoot 28 percent
only get beat by two points, I
that is a pretty good effort."
The biggest thorn in A&M’s
side proved to be Houston guard
Cynthia Jackson. Jackson finished
the game with 23 points, 17
which came in the second halfto
spark the Cougars' rally.
Hickey said her squad dida
good job of holding the rest of the
Cougars in check, but Jackson's
performance was too much for
A&M to handle.
"Jackson went nuts," Hickey
said. "But we did some [
things covering some other people
and there just a well-rounded
team. Any time you play a team
with five players like they have,
somebody is going to get hotc
you and you've got to stop them.
The Lady Aggies will now
travel to Lubbock to take on the
Texas Tech Red Raiders in thefi
nal regular season contest on
Wednesday. Tech is 21-4 on the
season, 11-1 in conference play
and could clinch the conferenced-
tie with a win over A&M.
After completing conference
play, the Lady Aggies will com
pete in the conference tournament
in Dallas, and Hickey said he
squad will have something li
prove in the final game and the
tourney.
"This is a whole new season,’
Hickey'said. "If anything, we're
going to have a lot to prove now
From now on, everything we do is
going to ride on us trying our best
to get into the finals of the confer
ence tournament. No if's, and'sm
but's about it, that's what we have
to do."

The Texas A&M Sailing Team came home a winner from Spring Hill’s Old
South Invitational Regatta. The regatta, held on February 22-23 in Mobile,
Alabama, was an intersectional meeting of the Southeastern and South Atlantic
sailing divisions. The University of Texas finished second and Florida took
third. Other schools competing were Texas A&M at Galveston, Spring Hill,
Charleston, Eckerd College and Georgia Tech.
Chris Junge and Larry Wise finished second in the A division, while Dean
Pledger and Robert Dudek won the B division. The combined finished for both
divisions determined the winner of the regatta.
Texas A&M has won three out of three regattas this semester, and is in a
good position to return to the national collegiate championships which will be
held this June in Charleston. \
The Sailing Team will be hosting a regatta at Bryan Utilities Lake on
March 14. Anyone interested in seeing collegiate yacht racing is welcome to
come. For more information about the team, please call Dean Pledger at
696-0994.
