Polo Club owner defends pet ban spade Phillips, pi
by Matt Kowalski
Continued from Page 1
Fulfer encourages pet owners
who cannot find a home for their
pets to bring them to the shelter.
The shelter regularly allows
apartment residents to adopt pets,
but no pets are given to residents
of apartments that do not allow
animals, Fulfer said.
Eakins said she knew about
the no pet policy at Polo Club but
thought she could keep the kitten
for a few months.
"My lease will be up in May
and I plan on moving," Eakins
said. "Anyway, the owner's
daughter has a cat, too."
A1 Lehtonen, owner of Polo
Club, said he can run the apart
ments as he sees fit. Even though
his daughter is under the same
contractual obligations as the oth
er tenants, the owner said she
doesn't have to pay fines or get rid
of her cat. However, Lehtonen
said he has asked his daughter to
get rid of her cat.
Lehtonen said pets were once
allowed in the apartments, but the
repair costs for damage the ani
mals caused far exceeded the ten
ants' pet deposits.
The pets tore up the mini
blinds, shredded the carpets and
urinated on the floors, he said.
"Many of the apartments had
to be completely renovated,"
Lehtonen said.
The practice of forbidding ani
mals is unfair to those tenants
who must give up their pets, said
Barbara Jones, president of the
Bryan-College Station Apartment
Association. She suggested peo
ple who have had their pets evict
ed should contact an attorney.

must also find a home for her cat.
Although she won't be giving up
her pet, Castro feels the Polo Club
policy is unfair.
"If one person in the complex
is allowed to have a pet, everyone
should be allowed to have one,"
Castro said.
Karen White, manager of Tim
ber Ridge Apartments, agreed
pets can do a lot of damage, but
allows residents to keep pets un
der 25 pounds. She requires a $200
deposit, $75 of it non-refundable.
Tracy Hancock, assistant man
ager at Peppertree Apartments,
said her complex requires a $500
pet deposit. Hancock said she
agrees that animals cause damage,
but she feels she can't deny people
the right to keep pets.
"You can't really tell someone
they can't bring a pet they've had
for years," Hancock said.

Campaign

Fair trade between all na
tions — not just North Amer
ican partners — is necessary
to help reduce the national
trade deficit, Clinton said.
Unfair barriers other coun
tries have erected to keep out
American goods must come
down before true prosperity
can take root.
"Part of what Bill criti
cizes Reagan and Bush for is
saying that they believe in
free trade, but not being will
ing to exercise America's pre
rogative to retaliate where
the trade we are subjected to
is neither free nor fair," she
said.
"A retaliatory policy is
not just aimed at Japan be
cause there are a lot of coun
tries that take advantage of
our philosophy for free trade.
"If we did that a few
times, it would send a very
strong signal to the entire
trading world that they're
going to have to be more fair
to our people."
Clinton also offered a
more local reason why
Bryan-College Station would
benefit if her husband were
elected president.
"If for no other reason,
Bryan-College Station should
vote for Bill Clinton because
of all those tourist dollars the
Bush Presidential Library
will bring if it's built here
four years early," she said. "I
still don't know what they're
going to find to put in it,
though — that in itself
should be worth the trip."

Group petitions for helicopter class
Continued from Page 1
"You develop a sixth sense
about where you are in relation
ship to landmarks," Birdsell said.
During the flight, Ken Witcher,
vice president for AHS, took over
the controls of the helicopter for
five minutes.
Witcher, a junior management
major, said he would like to be a
helicopter pilot for the U.S. Army.
"I've flown many times in mil
itary helicopters," he said. "To
get to ride in the front seat, and
getting a feel of the control stick
was extremely motivating, due to
the fact I want to fly (helicopters)
for my career."
G.C. Erman, a senior aerospace
engineering major from Tampa,
Fla., said he had flown in a heli
copter before Saturday.
"I get a kick out of going side
ways," he said "It's kind of scary
in a way, but I think it's safe."
The American Helicopter Soci
ety is more technological than
anything else, AHS president Jim
Stidfole said. Most of the members
are engineers and do not have a
desire to be helicopter pilots, he
said.
The club was established in
1943 for the purpose of advancing
the theory and practice of the sci
ence of rotary wing aircraft and all
allied arts and sciences.
Members of AHS would like to
have a new course — designed for
potential helicopter pilots -
added to the Aerospace Engineer
ing curriculum.
The course would be titled He
licopter Performance, Dynamics,
Stability and Control.
A petition to add the class to
the curriculum is available for
anyone to sign on the AHS
letin board on the first floor of the
H. R. Bright Building.
For more information please
call Jim Stidfole at 764-1718.
Buchanan wrongly depicts South, official says
Continued from Page 1
agreed with commentators who
have suggested that Buchanan's
restrictive immigration views are
a kind of fascism.
"I think that Pat certainly flirts
with it ... it being fascism,” Ben
nett replied.
"Pat has a mighty heart . . . but
I am very disappointed with the
character and quality of the ap
proach he is making,” said Ben
nett, who served with Buchanan
in the Reagan administration.
He added. Bush "has to stand
up and fight for conservatives"
and that some of the president's
advisers have unwisely conceded
conservative votes to Buchanan.
White House Chief of Staff
Samuel Skinner, interviewed on
NBC-TV's "Meet the Press," said
he believed many Buchanan sup
porters were "expressing some
kind of frustration" and were "not
really serious Buchanan voters."
"When conservatives look at
the record of George Bush, they
will see a very conservative
record," Skinner said.
"It might not be quite as con
servative as they would like in
some areas, but it is a very conser
vative record," he said.
South Carolina Gov. Carroll
Campbell Jr., in Atlanta to cam
paign for Bush, appeared on CBS-
TV's "Face the Nation" and said
Buchanan, in his appeal for votes,
was inaccurately portraying the
South as reactionary and isolation
ist.
"We are not talking about
building a wall around America,"
Campbell said. "We are talking
about taking our place in the
world."
Buchanan has assailed Bush as
an internationalist and has wa;
an "America First" campaign.
