As long having been an advocate of an
"Aggie Honor System", I was pleased to
read that the Student Senate approved a
resolution endorsing an honor system based
on the Aggie Code of Honor. I was,
however, somewhat intrigued by the
comparison to Ivy League schools and
others as quoted by a student senator as
part of the rationale for implementing such
a system. Although, not to make light of
this individual's quote, I am not aware of
any Ivy League schools with enrollments of
40,000-plus offering a number of classes
comprised of 150 or more students.
Texas A&M as an entity, all of its
outstanding accomplishments and goals
notwithstanding, is nevertheless a large
state university (a.k.a. degree factory)
which is also charged with educating
(diplomaizing) as many qualified young
men and women as efficiently and
economically as possible. In light of a
perceived need to stem a tide of cheating
(also known among students attending
large state universities as utilization of the
universal answer principle), the Student
Senate might be better served by advocating
a "level playing field" rather than what
some might perceive as a covert whistle
blowing system.
I concede that "lookization" (the ability
to see your neighbor's work in progress)
might be lessened by promoting an Aggie
Honor System; however, lehs be real.
Given that a considerable amount of
cheating occurs from advance distribution
of test answers and mass exchange of term
papers and such, the Senate might better
serve student by advocating and
developing a campus-wide test and
materia] file that would provide students
not associated with the Corps, fraternities,
sororities, Cain Hall and other campus
organizations or those relying on "Notes-n-
Quotes" with an opportunity to have equal
access to "previous knowledge."
Through a cooperative effort, the Student
Senate, the library and course instructors
can build on the existing "old" tests and
other materials currently available in the
library to comprise a base of information
which students might access in order to
better prepare themselves, thus alleviating
the need to obtain information via other
more nefarious means.
Ultimately, each student must
demonstrate the capacity to utilize
information, and, as in all situations, it will
be left to the individual as to how he or she
will make their way through A&M. The
Student Senate, as representative of the
A&M student body should strive in a
practical manner to serve all students
regardless of affiliation, as well as to
promote lofty ideals.
having trouble defending who it accepts in
its organization.
Some of these instances involve public
institutions which should accept the general
public, but others involve private groups.
As a former Eagle Scout and camp
counselor, I know that Boy Scouts is
attached to its leaders, heterosexual people,
like they are attached to America and the
Red, White and Blue.
Accepting homosexuals and women in
the BSA is like asking scouts and their
leaders to accept Pink, Mauve and Fuchsia
as our nation's colors. Good luck,
whoever's trying.
Scout leaders have become paranoid
with isolated tales of scoutmaster
molestation and declining membership
numbers in recent years. Homosexuals'
involvement is seen as a threat to both
problems.
Parts of the scout law and oath include a
scout promising to be 'reverent' and
'morally straight.' Every member is
required to profess these beliefs at each
meeting. On this basis. Scout leaders,
having interpretations from the Bible
against homosexuality, argue that
homosexuals can't fit in with the
organization's ideals.
Until the BSA transforms its philosophy,
it is not ready or prepared to accommodate
homosexual leadership.
And should it?
The BSA is a private, loosely Judeo-
Christian organization dedicated to the
education and leadership training of boys
between 11 and 17 years old.
While these qualifications do exclude
some people, can the courts take away the
BSA's right to determine who it will accept
for membership?
If your answer is yes, do you agree also
when private minority scholarships are
given to blacks, excluding equally needy
candidates who are Vietnamese?
Private groups of people are exclusively
regulated by nature whether reasonably or
unreasonably. Change can only occur from
within, and then without.
Would it seem practical for the
government to decide that the Ku Klux
Klan must accept people of different ethnic
and religious backgrounds?
That will prove about as effective as
what people are attempting to do with the
Boy Scouts of America.

Greeks give frats

As Resident Advisers for Moore Hall Wf

witnessed a form of behavior, that I thouglii
had been removed from campus. I would
like to thank Tau Kappa Epsilon Fratemih

to continue. One of our residents was
having a quarrel with another. Evidently
there was a punch thrown and words
exchanged. The one resident, a pledge for
Tau Kappa Epsilon, thought it would be in
his best interest to call, "all 130 ofhis
fraternity brothers to be here in 10 minutes
to kick some ass."
Three members managed to gain illegal
entry to the building, while at best count,
seven others remained outside. (Once the
University Police Department arrived, they
seemed to be the first to scatter.) Once
inside the building they proceeded to help
escalate the emotions. Along with
preventing the Resident Advisors and the
Resident Directors from doing their job,

No homosexuals
in scouts
In reading an article in The Battalion
about homosexual, lesbian and women's
efforts to affiliate with the Boy Scouts of
America, I thought about the freedom of
association we experience in this country.
As individuals, we have a generic right
to associate with whomever we choose.
Yet, freedom of association within
groups of people has come under
government's parental influence time and
time again.
Just how much self-determination is
allowed to us within a group setting?
David Duke is rejected from the
Republican Party (and Pat Buchanan is not-

Private schools reserve the right to have
an all-male or all-female constitution and
some colleges have declared that the only
fraternities they will allow on campus will
be co-ed ucational.
However, their have been lawsuits, such
as women attempting to join traditionally
all-male clubs, fraternities' little sisters
trying to be initiated as a 'brother' and, here
at home, women have asserted themselves
to become members of the Aggie Band and
Cavalry.
And the Boys Scouts of America is
There was some bad bull going on Friday
night and it involves the University's finest,
the Parking, Transit and Traffic Services.
There were four of them hanging out
behind the Commons, between Wells and
Epright. These polite individuals were
harassing motorists by blinking flashlights
in drivers' eyes. One unfortunate Ag was a
victim of this harassment. The Ag pulled in
that circle area and stopped to let his friend
run into Wells Dorm.
The PTTS immediately shined his
flashlight in the driver's face. When the car
did not move, he wrote the Ag a ticket.
This Ag did not do anything wrong. His
car was still running, the lights were still
on, and he was still in the driver's seat. He
was not blocking any traffic, or even
bothering anyone, except the beloved PTTS.
I know that this circle area behind the
Commons is no-parking zone, but he was
not parked. He was waiting for his friend
to return.
These four PTTS personnel were
harassing even more motorists, including a
lady Ag who stopped her car just to put
something in the trunk. The PTTS yelled at
her, "I would not park there!" in a
menacing voice. There were several others
that fell prey to this harassment.
I know that the PTTS is picked on all the
time by Ags, but that does not give them
the right to harass the students by giving
meaningless tickets for doing nothing
illegal. If you were one of these students
that was mistreated that Friday night or
have been mistreated in the past, call the
PTTS and let them know (845-9700.)
Be careful out there Ags because some
PTTS personnel might be having a bad day
and they will take it out on you, even if you
are completely innocent. Just ask anyone
I am here to answer the call for support
of Stephen Ruth. I am not a cadet, I am a
veteran. More importantly, 1 am a combat
veteran. As a combat veteran, I will be the
first to tell you that war sucks! Not just for
the soldier, but for everyone else involved.
As a soldier, the fear of being in combat is

second only to the knowledge that your Hodden Char
parents and your 11-year-old sister sit glued
to the television, crying scared that their jfiased down an
only son and brother will come home dead.
However, as a soldier, I will also be the
first to tell you that war is necessary.
Without war, where would this great nation
of ours be? It was war that freed us from the
aggression of the British Empire in the
Revolution. It was war that brought an end
to slavery in the Civil War. It was also war
that protected us from fascist aggression
during World Wars I and II.
Nobody loves war. Military personnel
are not the blood-thirsty warmongers who
people like Michael C. Worsham make us
out to be. On the contrary, peace, is more
valuable to the soldier than to anyone else
in the world. For when there is not peace, it
is the soldiers who must put their lives on
the line to restore it.
We all enjoy the freedom to do and say
what we want. Certainly the Michael
Worsham's of the world have the right to
express their opinions just like anyone else.
Fortunately there are those of us who
understand that these freedoms do not
come free, and we are willing to pay the
price to protect them for others. It is equally
unfortunate that there are those people who
do not share this understanding.
Apparently those people place peace above
freedom.
Before I go, I want to share some words
of wisdom with you. Read them, think
about them and understand them.
"Peace, without freedom, is slavery." It's
this belief that justifies war.
