With these words, Lou Reed closes his latest album, possibly one of the best works of his career. After the sheer power of both "New York" and "Songs for Drella," there was some doubt whether Reed could keep up the high quality. With the release of "Magic and Loss," there's no doubt that Reed is at the height of his career. The album continues experimenting with the concept approach that worked so well on his previous two albums. Using the recent deaths of two of his closest friends as a starting point, Reed creates a song cycle that illustrates how he found inner meaning to his own life through his friends' struggle with cancer. It's not exactly en tertaining stuff, nor is it meant to be. Instead, "Magic and Loss" is in the style of confessional poet ry, meant as a catharsis for both writer and listener. The only real rock songs are "What's Good," "Sword of Damocles" and a one or two others. The rest are basi cally spoken word compositions set to backing music. "Magic and Loss" begins with "Dorita" and "What's Good," songs that were com bined into one track on the recent "Until the End of the World" soundtrack. Lyrically, this first piece is the weakest section of the record. It serves only two real purposes. First, this song is by far the catchiest on the record, it could easily be a single. Secondly, it sets up the basic theme of the whole album, "Life's good, but not fair at all." A later song, "Sword of Damocles" presents Reed's frus tration as he views the futile struggles of his friend. Reed reminisces, "Now I have seen lots of people die/from car crashes or drugs.../but this drawn out torture over which # n A (i part of you lives/is very hard to take/To cure you they must kill you/the Sword of Damocles above your head." If all this seems extremely dark, it is. "Magic and Loss" is a hard album to listen to in its en tirety. However, if given a com plete listen, the album ends up as a cathartic experience, as uplift ing in the end as most of the ma terial is tragic. With the last song, "Magic and Loss -the Summa tion," Reed finally comes to grips with both his losses and his own mortality. "As you pass through fire...you cannot remain the same/ There's a bit of magic in everything/ And then some loss to even things out." le the conseti', d deal strayiiij answei nes. fit 'se idea 3c t froa anceth If, as 4 nsisteni ?nt, ami red sev- ity.
