WASHINGTON (AP) — Archivists are poring over Nazi death camp records in a new American Red Cross effort to catalog thousands of names and help families of Holocaust victims learn the fate of their loved ones. The original records — including transport lists, death books and lists of victims of medical experi ments — have been accessible to the public through the National Archives for 20 years. But because they are difficult to wade through, they have been of val ue mostly to historians and scholars. These documents “will now be used for a truly humanitarian purpose," Elizabeth Dole, president of the American Red Cross, said Tuesday. “Yellow with age, these documents will bring light to the final days of hundreds of thousands who suffered," she said. “They provide vital information on at least 300,000 individuals, and possibly as many as half a million, who disappeared at the hands of the Nazis." On Tuesday, Dole presented microfilm of the first 7,000 names to the International Committee of the Red Cross to be cross-referenced and integrated into the files of its International Tracing Service in Arolsen, Germany. The international service, which was launchj ter World War II, has 46 million records on 13> people, but most of the names from thedeatli records the National Archives holds are new Cross officials said. Panama City Beach, Florida land." Nash cited the misrepresenta tion and neglect of indigenous peoples in the historical accounts of Columbus' voyage. "We rarely read stories written by Native Americans," Nash said. "We need to read primary sources to piece together the history that the victors have tried to hide." The upcoming quincentennial celebration of Columbus' voyage should be viewed as a chance to develop critical thinking skills, Nash said . "We have to be critical of the use of words like 'encounter' and 'discovery,' which mask the un derlying genocide and invasion," Nash said. Words such as "poor," "sav age," and "primitive" should not be used to describe Native Ameri cans because they conjure nega tive images, said Nash. He said the world's inhabitants must move from a condition of cultural intolerance — as found in 1492 — to a condition of mutual cultural celebration, where "you are aware not just of your own culture, but also of the culture of others and you want to celebrate it." Most Americans are in a state of cultural tolerance, which thinly masks cultural ignorance and stereotyping behavior, Nash said. To move forward along the cul tural continuum, people must ed ucate themselves about other cul tures and at least become cultural ly competent, he said. "Cultural competency means that we start with a certain await ness of ourselves and of others, spect for ourselves and others! knowledge of ourselves and otl ers and the skills thata/lowus interact," Nash said. While people are celebraii Columbus, they should rememte the different peoples who were part of their history, Nash sail He also suggested having a day celebrate those peoples. Nash said people all must their part to expand cultural hoi zons. "Moving from discovery multiculturalism is going totafe concerted efforts from all of us,' he said. 1 Subjects needed for group study. Subject will be required to attend two to four hours.
