"There are a lot of other teams
losing."
And the conference title is up
for grabs. Every conference team
has at least one league defeat and
half have two or more. All three
of A&M's conferences defeats
have been close, including losses
of four and three points.
Barone thinks his team has
continued to improve throughout
the season.
"If you're going to judge us on
our win/loss record, we haven't
played very well," he said. "But
if you judge us on improvement, I
think we've made great improve

"We honestly could be 3-0 in
league. We missed 19 free throws
against Texas. We're down 18 in
the second half against SMU, and
they beat us on a tap dunk at the
buzzer."
For the Aggies to get their first
win, McGinnis said the team has
to relax and play hard.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ricky Sanders of
the Washington Redskins, who has set some
Super Bowl records himself, looks with awe at
James Lofton and Art Monk.
"They're like my grandfathers," he says.
"That's what they are. Grandpas."
The Redskins and Buffalo Bills enter Sun
day's Super Bowl with super sets of receivers,
none more so than the 34-year-old Monk and
the 35-year-old Lofton.
Each is within a couple of games of two of
Steve Largent's career receiving record
Monk, who has 801 career receptions,
should pass Largent's 819 early next season,
while Lofton is just 55 yards behind Largent's
record of 13,089.
Continue with Andre Reed of the Bills and
Gary Clark of the Redskins, two of the NFL's
most dangerous over-the-middle threats and
two of the best runners after a catch. And both
go to the Pro Bowl regularly.
"Not quite." Clark complains. "Andre goes
to Hawaii every year. I just go once in a
while."
And finish with two more Buffalo's Don
Beebe and Washington's Sanders. They're the
speed guys.
Sanders is best known for his 80-yard re
ception in 1988 that started the Redskins' 35-
point second quarter against the Denver Bron
cos. He had 193 yards in that game, second
only to Jerry Rice's 215 in the 1989 game.
Beebe had his coming out in the second
game this year, when he caught 10 passes, four
for touchdowns, in a 52-34 victory over the
Pittsburgh Steelers.
Put all six together and they represent two
of the best receiving trios in the league, ap
proached only by the Houston Oilers (Drew

Hill, Haywood Jeffires, Ernest Givins) and At
lanta Falcons (Andre Risen, Michael Haynes,
Mike Pritchard).
The Falcons and Oilers both play run-and-
shoot systems, and keep as many as eight re
ceivers on the roster. The only other conven
tional offense to approach the Bills and Red
skins in receivers might be the San Francisco
49ers, and only on the rare occasions when
Mike Sherrard is healthy enough to join Rice
and John Taylor.
"Both teams have a problem on defense,”
Washington coach Joe Gibbs acknowled
Thursday as the players met with the medi
for the final time before the game. "Youhai
to decide if you defense the run or the pass
you defense the run, both sides have thr
guys who can kill you."
Washington usually keeps seven, eve
eight players to protect quarterback MarkRyi
ien, then may flood a zone with Monk, Sande;
and Clark.
Clark most often os a first-down playai
tion target 15 or 20 yards over the middle
Sanders is a threat deep on the sideline, an;
Monk is the guy Rypien will find 11 yard:
down on the sideline when it's third andl
Running back Earnest Byner, who caught
passes, is the only other Washington receivd
who's utilized regularly. Terry Orr, one
three tight ends, averaged 20.1 yards on
catches, four of them touchdowns.
The Bills, with their no-huddle offens
generally use the five offensive linemen
block and then throw to tight end Keith Me
eller (44 catches) and running back Thurmr
Thomas (61 catches) as well as Reed
Lofton (57) and Beebe (32 in 11 games).
Both Beebe and Lofton will go deep. Ree;
is the medium-range receiver, while Reed
McKeller and Thomas most often aie the third
down receivers. Butch Rolle, the third-strin;
tight end, is a TD specialist. Until he caught
5-yard pass in the last regular-season game,hi
previous 10 catches since 1987 were for touch
downs.
"I love my options, particularly since
has come along so well," Bills quarterbackjiir
Kelly said. "But Washington has somepreth
good guys, too. I played with Ricky. I'd lovet;
make him our fourth."

Magic terrified his NBA competition.
Assists. Rebounds. Points. Johnson did it
all.
The only players who weren't afraid to
take the court with Magic were his team
mates. He was the wrecker of great defenses.
The guard that rebounded like a center. The
general of showtime, the greatest offensive
attack since D-Day.
And it was service with a smile. But now,
Johnson is not a professional basketball play
er.
He is a victim of AIDS.
With the physical nature of basketball, it
is not uncommon for a player to bleed during
a game. If Johnson were to develop a cut,
let's say, after diving for a loose ball, and an
other player had an open wound, it's possible
that the virus could be contracted.
The chances are slim, but they remain.
Surely, there are people who put on their
seatbelts even when they're just going down
the street to the store. Don't most parents put
their children in baby-seats when going for a
car trip?
The chances of getting in a car wreck on
your way to the store are slim. You can make
your trek on quiet residential streets and stay
off big thoroughfares. You can drive slowly.
And you probably won't be in an acci
dent, but you still go ahead .^nd put the seat-
belt on for extra safety. If there's a chanced
danger, you take a precaution.
AIDS is different because it deals with
people's lives. To make someone an outcast
from society because of a disease is wrong.
But the Australians aren't trying to ostra
cize Magic from society. They're not asking
him to live in a bubble and never come out
They're asking him to not play in the
Olympics. Between his many championship
rings and‘MVP awards, it seems like Magic
would consider sitting out.
Maybe he will. Maybe he won't. Too bad
it's even an issue.
