Page 6 The Battalion Thursday, Decembers, A&M defense busy preparing for Florida State's talented backfield Continued from Page 5 The Aggies could surprise FSU like they surprised Brigham Young in last year's Holiday Bowl, Teichelman said.. BYU was heavily favored going into the game, but the Aggies came up with a 65-14 win. It was the largest margin of victory in bowl history. "It's just like last year and the Holiday Bowl," Teichelman said. "We might just come out and surprise somebody." The Seminoles have one of the most versatile offensive backfields in the coun try. Weldon, a senior, was a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award. He was the 11th best offensive player, averaging 227 yards total offense per game. Junior tailback Amp Lee is an All-America candidate and is one of the shiftiest runners in the na tion. But senior fullback Edgar Bennett may be the best of the three. The least herald ed of the group, Bennett is an effective blocker and runner, and can catch passes coming out of the backfield. Atkinson is wary of Bennett's abilities. "Edgar Bennett is the best fullback I've ever seen," Atkinson said. "He's in a class with (former Texas A&M fullback) Robert Wilson. Their backfield is a lot like ours was with Darren Lewis and Robert." As an Aggie, Lewis rushed for more yards than any runner in Southwest Con ference history. Wilson was Lewis' pri mary blocker. "Amp Lee is a lot like Darren. He doesn't have blazing speed. He's not that type of runner, but he's real quick and he can make a fool out of anybody. "They have the best backs in the na tion, and their quarterback has a real good arm." Weldon won this year's Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given to the best se nior quarterback in the country. "You always have the deep ball threat which puts pressure on the secondary," Atkinson said. "And they're going to pressure us up front. First, we have to try to stop their run, and then if we do, they'll start throwing. They're going to be a tough opponent." As a unit, the A&M defense is ranked No. lin the nation, allowing 221 yards of total offense per game. The Aggies rush ing defense is No. 4 and rate No. 8 in scor ing defense, giving up 13 points a game. FSU's offense is the 12th best in country, averaging 450 yards a game. A&M junior linebacker Marcus Bud ley welcomes the challenge that the R. offense brings. "I think it's something our wholei fense is looking forward to," Buddi said. "Their offense is near the top ini nation. Knowing they have such a (offensive) backfield, it's just a chalbj for our defense. "I wouldn't say we're nervous, just another big game we have to prepa.; for. Put anyone on the field and we' ing to prepare for them the same." PERFORMING FRIDAY DEC. 13 ecc Andro Continued from Page 5 Let either Washington beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl and Miami lose to Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. Or let Michigan and Washington tie and Miami destroy Nebraska, so we don't have to go through another Col- orado-Georgia Tech fiasco like last year, when the Buffaloes finished the year ranked on top of the Associated Press poll, and the Yellow Jackets finished on top of the United Press Inter national poll. That's about it for the foot ball list. Now let's go to the baseball Christmas list. •Santa, let Bobby Bonilla feed a country or two with his salary. The country is in a re cession in just about everything except for baseball. Bonilla gets more than five and a half mil lion dollars for hitting a little Whitehall. He can't even play defense. So Santa, make sure the baseball owners are in their right minds over this holiday season. That is pretty much it for the baseball list. I'll worry more about baseball when it comes time to ask the Easter Bunny for presents. papers ryears. I Once Let's talk about hoops. rile Daquiri lacfory mmm 8-10 pm 25C Draft Beer $1.25 Daquiris Since it's the winter meet ings for the major league teams, Santa has to be keeping track of the events taking place there. •So Santa, please send the Texas Rangers home from the meetings before they do some thing stupid. They are talking about trading Ruben Sierra, one of the best young players in baseball. They would rather do that than pay him $6 million a year. • If the Rangers want to win, they would pay Sierra the mon ey. The Rangers need to start building a winner and quit be ing concerned about whether Nolan Ryan is going to continue to sell tickets, whether they win or lose. •Santa, let the Aggies win some basketball games this year. They sure try hard, but al ways seem to come up on the losing end of the scoreboard. Santa has to love a team tha; hustles and plays hard for 40 minutes. So please Santa, start rewarding the Aggies with a few wins. • And Santa, please let old Ebeneezer Scrooge himself, Bill Laimbeer, decide to give up the game of basketball and devote the rest of his life to trying to be a good-will ambassador. That would truly be a Christmas mil acle. So now it's time to check thf list twice and send it to the North Pole.
