Loan program receives funding
Continued from Page 1
Loans, the College Access Loans
(CAL) for middle-income stu
dents, the Supplemental Loan for
Students (SLS) and the Health Ed
ucation Assistance Loans (HEAL)
for students in health-related ma
jors.
Engelage said students could
o to commerdal lenders, such as
anks, for every loan but a CAL,
but the interest rate would be
higher than it would be through
Hinson-Hazlewood.
"No commerdal lenders offer
the College Access Loans," he
said.
Engelage said the same pro
posal was voted on in August and
failed.
'The proposal primarily failed
because its backers assumed that
because the money was for stu
dents, voters would pass it," he
said, "so there wasn't a big push
for it."
Another reason it failed the
first time, he said, is because of
confusing wording.
Scott Sallman, a senior indus
trial distribution major, said he re
ceives a College Access Loan
through Hinson-Hazlewood, and
was very relieved that the funding
proposition passed.
"If it weren't for the College
Access Loan, I wouldn't be here,"
he said. "If it hadn't passed, and
my other funds had run out, I
don't know what I would have
done."
He said his funds were guar
anteed through the end of the
year, but he was glad when the
proposal was resubmitted for a
vote.
Twenty-two percent of the reg
istered voters in Brazos County
voted Tuesday and 70 percent of
those voted for the proposition.
