A&M has the
right 'stuff
A &M football fans saw the
stuff champions are made up
of Saturday at Kyle Field.
A&M's offense put together a
crucial scoring drive at the end of the
game to preserve victory over Hous
ton. The Aggie defense came up with
two interceptions by Kary Vincent to
stop two Cougar comebacks during
the second half. Senior quarterback
Bucky Richardson didn't have a
great day, but he did what it took to
win.
That's the stuff of champions.
It's hard to tell if other teams in
the Southwest Conference have it.
Texas isn't consistent but has all the
right tools. Arkansas doesn't have
the tools, but so far its the team to
beat. Baylor's got it all, they just
need to learn how to win.
But the SWC season is long from
over. A&M must travel to Rice and
TCU before hosting the Hogs and
Longhorns. The Aggies must win
the rest of their games if they expect
a conference crown and a trip to the
I Cotton Bowl.
Winning the rest of their games
I isn't asking too much. This A&M
I team is made of champions.
But the best part of Saturday's
I game was seeing Houston come to
I life. Some people were disappointed
I that the Aggies didn't thrash the
I Cougars, but there's good reason for
I the 28-17 final score.
First, UH quarterback David
I Klingler showed why he's an NFL
I prospect. Under tremendous pres-

A&M continues climb up poll
No. 12 Aggies need to find second half formula
From Staff and Wire Reports
The Texas A&M football team moved
to No. 12 in this week's Associated Press
Top 25 Poll.
The Aggies, 5-1 and undefeated in
three Southwest Conference games, im
proved their national standing after a 27-
18 victory over the University of Houston
last Saturday.
A&M was one of three SWC teams in
this week's poll. Baylor and Arkansas
also moved up one spot each. The Bears
sit at No. 21, and the Razorbacks are at
No. 24.
Baylor and Arkansas will meet this
Saturday in Fayetteville.
The Aggies travel to Houston Satur
day to play Rice at 2 p.m. at Rice Stadi
um.
The A&M offense will attempt to get
off to another fast start against the Owls.
The Aggies have outscored their six op
ponents in the first half 162-13 this sea
son.
But A&M has been outscored 80-4‘ in
the second half this year. Last Saturday
Houston rallied for 15 second half points
before A&M finally put the lock on a win.
Quarterback Bucky Richardson said
the A&M offense had to regain its compo
sure in the second half to help the Aggies
hold onto the win..
"We came out in the second half and
made mental mistake after mental mis-
peo-
ple going the wrong way. I'd throw bad
throws, people were running bad routes
— it was everybody.
"It was just a matter of us saying,
'Look, let's calm down, we've got ner
vous feet a little bit, and get our compo
sure back, and let's go out and get on the
victim.'"
Greg Hill's 22-yard touchdown run in
the fourth quarter capped a five play, 46-
yard drive the provided the final margin
of victory for the Aggies.
Arkansas sits in first place in the SWC
race at 4-0 and 5-2 overall.
A&M holds the second spot, while
Texas, 2-1 in the conference and 3-3 over
all, and Baylor 3-2 and 6-2, follow.

A&M running back Greg Hill celebrates his 22-yai d fourth quarter 18 victory over the University of Houston. The win helped A&M move

Chiefs chop
Raiders in
final minute
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — At
least the week was not a total flop for
the tomahawk chop.
Steve DeBerg hit Tim Barnett with
a 6-yard touchdown pass with 47 sec
onds to go Monday night, capping a
57-yard drive that vaulted the Kansas
City Chiefs
over the Los
Angeles
Raiders 24-21.
One night
after the Min
nesota Twins
beat the At
lanta Braves in
the seventh
:ame of the
r orld Series, the 77,000 tomahawk
chopping Chiefs fans saw their team
slice through the Raiders defense for
two late touchdowns.
DeBerg faced fourth-and-four
from the 11 and rifled a pass to Todd
McNair, who leaned away from a
tackier for a first down at the 6 with
51 seconds left. He then found Barnett
cutting across the end zone for the
winning score.
The Raiders (5-4), losing for only
the seventh time in 37 Monday night
games, led 21-10 and had the ball in
side the 10 when Lloyd Burruss inter
cepted Jay Schroeder's pass and re
turned it 83 yards to the 15. On
fourth-and-inches, Christian Okoye
slanted around left end for the touch
down, making it 21-17.
After forcing a punt, the Chiefs
got 18 yards on DeBerg's pass to Pete
Holohan that almost was intercepted
by Ronnie Lott, whose fourth-quarter
interceptions were pivotal in the
Raiders' previous two victories.
After rookie Harvey Williams ran
11 yards to the 39, Fred Jones caught a
9-yard pass at the goal line, but he
was called for offensive interference
against Lionel Washington. That
dropped the Chiefs back to the 19, but
DeBerg hit McNair at the 11, then
again for the critical first down.
Then he and Barnett chopped
down the Raiders.
