BROWNSVILLE (AP) -
school district is consideriij

District chief administratorft i

Jury exonerates Sakowitz
in family fortune lawsuit
HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston
jury Wednesday decided that mil
lionaire businessman Robert
Sakowitz was not responsible for
the loss of the family's fashionable
clothing store fortune, rejecting ac
cusations by three nephews who
sued him.
"I feel absolutely great,"
Sakowitz said moments after the
verdict. "It has been extremely
draining ...over the last six years.
It's so good to have a clean sweep
(with jurors voting 12-0 to reject
the charges) and to have the fami
ly name exonerated. To have my
name exonerated."
Jurors deliberated nearly five
hours before returning with their
decision.
Douglas Wyatt, 34 and the el
dest nephew, accused Sakowitz of
losing the family fortune and run
ning the Sakowitz Inc. into
bankruptcy to line his own pock
ets. The Family patriarch, Bernard
Sakowitz, who died in 1981,
named Robert as executor of his
estate and his successor in the
firm.
Wyatt and his two brothers
were seeking about $7.5 million he
says his uncle took from Sakowitz.
They also sought a penalty for al
legedly breaching the family trust.
The six-man, six-woman jury
voted no to all seven issues in the
case and denied any monetary
claims.
"I never understood why they
brought the case," said defense at
torney David Berg. "I thought it
was a desperate move. The case
was in my judgment was extreme
ly weak and viscous."
