Governor Roemer

meet in a Nov. 16 runoff.
Louisiana's three largest news
papers — The Times-Picayune of
New Orleans, the Baton Rouge
Sunday Advocate, and The Times
in Shreveport — endorsed Roemer
on Sunday.
Both Duke and Edwards are
reminding voters that in the 1987
campaign, Roemer promised no
new taxes and a leaner budget.
Taxes and fees have increased by
$500 million. The budget, at $9.1
billion, has grown 34 percent.
Bush will be host at a $5,000-a-
person reception and speak at a
$l,000-a-plate dinner for the gov
ernor.
Two years ago, the president
went on radio to plead with voters
in a suburban New Orleans dis
trict to turn their backs on Duke, a
candidate for the Legislature.
Duke won.
In the 1990 U.S. Senate race,
prominent Republicans gritted
their teeth and backed the Demo
cratic incumbent, Bennett John
ston, against Duke. Johnston re
tained his seat but Duke got 44
percent of the vote, including 60
percent of the white vote.
"He represents a portion of the
population that is a factor that
cannot be dismissed," Roemer

said of Duke. "At no time can it be
ignored."
"Whatever criticism you have,
give him his due," said Edwards.
"He is sincerely of the opinion
he's going to be governor of
Louisiana. He may be in error but
he's sure not in doubt."
Tall, blond, his face re-chiseled
by a plastic surgeon, 41-year-old
Duke draws big crowds that shrug
off his past ties with the Ku Klux
Klan and with American Nazis.
"If you condemn me for my
past I'd ask you to look in your
own life," Duke said. "If you have
never done something you'd take
back, maybe you could throw the
first stone at me. At least I'm
standing up and doing what I
think is right."
What's right for Duke is to
fight against big government, and
against welfare recipients who
won't work, who use drugs and
who have babies.
"I don't thoroughly under
stand it," Roemer said. "His base
seems to be built on anxiety and
fear with large doses and under
tones of race but also large doses
of anti-government.
"If you live in the past, you're
angry. That's not wholesome.
Who wants to live in 1951? I don't.
But, some people were more com
fortable then."

always seems to run into some
trouble.
"UPD acted very quickly in
giving us the information neces
sary to start tracing the calls,
Mazzulo said. "They recognte
that this type of behavior is a
crime no matter who it is directed
against, and we will definitely
prosecute anyone they catch."
Mazzulo said the hotline has
been very successful for the group
in the past, and credits the line for
a recent increase in the organiza
tion's membership.
"The hotline is a way for stu
dents to communicate with
GLSS," he said. "A lot of students
don't know at>out us. The line isa
way for us to let them know when
we have events and meetings com
ing up."
The hotline is also available for
gay and lesbian students who feel
they have been discriminated
against, he said.
"The messages can be relayed
through the president and me to
the proper authorities if someone
feels they have been harassed,"
Mazzulo said.
Reinhardt said the majority of
the messages left are legitimate.
"Most callers either want infor
mation on GLSS or are trying to
find support," he said. "Informa
tion on our roommate referral ser
vice is also available through the
hotline number (847-0321)."
Reinhardt said the number
adds a new dimension to the orga
nization.
"We have a lot of people from
around the country visit A&M
from other parts of the country,"
he said. "They always say they
can't believe there is actually a gay
