Andro continued from Page 7 the hospital for nine days. The Bears went on to win seven of their next nine games? Did anyone really care? People once again were shocked because he was an athlete. The sports news is always about someone accused of rape or someone with a steroids or a drug problem. These are the kinds of problems that happen everyday. But these are the kinds of things that can be pre vented. Deaths like Hyman's, Karkoska's and Glenn's are things that happen to every one. Athletes don't belong on pedestals. They live like every one else and unfortunately, they die like everyone else. James Glenn was just warming up for practice when his heart gave out. Hopefully, people won't remember him as an athlete that died, but rather as a friend, son, brother or neighbor. He just happened to play football. Now comes the grieving process. First and foremost every one's thoughts and prayers should be with his family and friends. And then there is the foot ball team. Players should now be more focused than ever. They have to realize that foot ball's just a game. Winning is great. But it is certainly not important as far as life goes. After the game, life goes on for them. Dedicating the rest of the season to Glenn would be a nice thing. But that shouldn't be necessary for them to re member him. The football players will re member James Glenn as a friend and as a teammate. Whether they win or lose shouldn't be important. Life will go on. Major League Update Braves win; Dodgers lose; Twins fail to clinch Braves 2, Reds 1 ATLANTA (AP) - Ron Gant's lOth-inning single scored Terry Pendleton from second base with the winning run, as the Atlanta Braves beat the Cincin nati Reds 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday to keep the pressure on Los Ange les in the NL West. The Braves entered the day trailing Los Angeles by two games. The Dodgers played a night game at San Diego. Pendleton hit a double off re liever Ted Power (4-3) before Gant delivered a single. Alejandro Pena (8-1) pitched one inning for the victory. Blue Jays 7, Angels 2 ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - John Olerud hit a three-run homer that capped a six-run ral ly in the fifth inning, as the first- place Toronto Blue Jays defeated the California Angels 7-2 Wednesday. The Blue Jays began the day with a two-game lead in the AL East over the Boston Red Sox, who were scheduled for a twi- night doubleheader at Baltimore. Mark Langston (17-8) was rocked for seven runs and eight hits in five innings. Jimmy Key (16-11) allowed six hits in seven innings, struck out two and walked one. Mookie Wilson led off the fifth with a single, took second on Manuel Lee's sacrifice and third on Devon White's infield hit. Roberto Alomar's double gave Toronto a 3-2 lead and Joe Carter followed with a RBI sin gle. Candy Maldonado was in tentionally walked and Olerud followed with his home ruru home, run and the San Diego Padres finally won against a con tender, routing the error-prone Los Angeles Dodgers 8-2 on Wednesday night. McGriff's homer, Benes' pitching and three infield errors that led to three unearned runs cost the Dodgers and Bob Ojeda. Padres 8, Dodgers 2 SAN DIEGO (AP) - Andy Benes won his 10th straight deci sion, Fred McGriff hit his 30th White Sox 6, Twins 1 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Scott Fletcher drove in two runs witha double and sacrifice fly, leading an early onslaught from the bot tom of Chicago's order Wednes day night, as the White Sox kept the Minnesota Twins from clinching a tie for the AL West with a 6-1 victory. Alex Fernandez (9-12) sur vived a shaky start to win his third successive decision, allow ing seven hits and one run before Scott Radinsky relieved with two out in the seventh. Melido Perez got the last three outs. Smith looking for next record continued from Page? light of an otherwise dismal per formance by the Aggies in the sec ond half. They wound up losing their first game of the year to the underdog Golden Hurricane, 35- 34. It was not the most ideal situa tion for making history. There were no marching bands or fan fare upon his arrival. But he did find one way to celebrate. "Quentin (Coryatt), myself, and my roommate were sitting there watching the Texas game, and Texas was getting beat. So that was kind of a relief, and it made me feel happy," he said. Smith said if he had the choice, he would rather have broken the record the previous weekend un der more favorable circumstances. "It would have been better if I'd got it at home last week against LSU. My mother was there, and we won the game, so it would The Daquiri Factory EQUINOX NOW OPEN! Nonetheless, the main thing for Smith is that the stigma of the record is behind him, and with it, the worries of his slump. "That interception meant more to me than just breaking the record," he said. "When I go into a game, I figure I'm supposed to get two or three interceptions, and then I played six games without getting one interception. No one really recognized that but myself." Yet having more interceptions than any other player in confer ence history is quite a feat. "We've had some great players here at A&M," A&M head football coach R.C. Slocum said. "Bryan Collins, Lester Hayes - guys that all wound up being All-Pro defen sive backs. He has intercepted more balls than any of them." Is it any wonder that in a sec- ondary nicknamed "Desert Storm II", Smith is called "Patriot" for the missile that intercepts the ene my's long bombs. And he has already been tabbec by many pro scouts as the leading cornerback in the nation and a high selection in the NFL Draft Although he feels he isn't at his peak, he knows what he does best "I may not be a superstar plat er, and I really feel that, but I'm going to force turnovers. I've ere ated a lot of turnovers since I've been here, and that's thestatthail look at," he said. So what is Smith's next target? He said he wants to take a shot at the NCAA record of 29 career in terceptions that has hung over the collegiate league for nearly Id years. Smith whll begin that campaignat Kyle Field on Saturday againstthe University of Southwestern Louisiana. JT ASSieLcinema.
