Sports Tuesday, September 24, 1991 The Battalion Page 3 Aggies must focus on positive aspects of Tulsa loss T exas A&M has lost its unbeaten status for three days now, and the pill is still bitter to swallow. It's hard to think of the Aggies with a loss. It's as if there should be an asterisk beside it, because it was a fluke. But it wasn't. Whether it was by one point or one hundred doesn't matter. Hello, loss column. After the Aggies' 45-7 dismantling of Louisiana State University last weekend at Kyle Field, beating up on lowly Tulsa seemed inevitable. The experts in Vegas picked A&M by 18 points. But then again, they also picked the Longhorns over Auburn. Still, the men in maroon looked solid until intermission. Granger's passing attack, which was a stark contrast from the option offense of Bucky Richardson, was right on the money. The play fake that scored a 61-yard touchdown in the first quar ter was executed to textbook perfec tion. Greg Hill was well on his way to 100 yards - again. The defense looked a little sluggish in Tulsa's touchdown drive early in the second quarter, but with a 28-10 lead, there was no room for com plaints. In the second half, there was noth- See Whitley/ Page 5 Aggies drop out of Top 25 Loss to Tulsa hurts A&M's national ranking l-'rom £taff and Wire Reports Texas A&M slipped completely out of the Associated Press Top 25 poll Mon day following the Aggies 35-34 loss to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane last Satur day. If he doesn't have a big game, they lose. Even quarterback Troy Aikman ad mits: "Our success is based on Emmitt running the ball." Smith, the NFL's 1990 rookie of the year, carried 23 times for 182 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 60 and 12 yards in the Cowboys 17-9 victory over Phoenix Sunday night. It was the third highest rushing total for a single game in Dallas history. Tony Dorsett had days of 183 and 206 yards during his career with the Cowboys. Smith also had long runs of 13 and 37 yards and caught three passes for 19 yards as Dallas evened its record at 2-2. It was the sixth time that Smith had rushed for more than 100 yards in his ca reer and the Cowboys have won on five of those occasions. The only game they lost was 33-31 to Washington two weeks ago when Smith gained 112 yards. "Give that little man just a crease and he's something special," said offensive tackle Nate Newton. "He can stop on a dime and give you nine and one-half cents change." Phoenix safety Tim McDonald said tackling Smith looks easy until you try to wrap him up. "He's not fast but he's quick and he's stronger than he looks," McDonald said. Smith, who carried 32 times in the Cowboys opener against Cleveland, was in the hot tub at Valley Ranch on Mon day soothing his nicks and bruises. "I felt much worse after the Cleve land game," Smith said. "But I'll bounce back for next week. Twenty-three carries is more like it. It gets tough when you get over 30 carries." Smith said he knew he would become See Smith/ Page 5 Merrill Lynch is hosting a reception for Dennis Reens and John Martin of Merrill Lynch Asset Management, Inc.
