Mike Mathews of the Col lege Station Police Department said his department has respond ed to the crimes by increasing its prevention programs. "We've implemented several different measures to combat this problem," Mathews said. "The crimes are concentrated on the northern fringes of College Sta tion, and we've increased our surveillance of parking lots in that area, like around the Hilton. "We also spoke to students about crime prevention at the Fish Camps," he said. "Getting people information about this problem goes a long way toward stopping it." Walling agreed prevention is essential, and offered suggestions for students. "If students have CD players or tape decks that can be easily re moved, they should take a few minutes to lock them in the trunk," Walling said. "Females should put their purses in the trunk, rather than under the seat. "If the thieves stop getting things in the burglaries, then they'll give up and go on to some thing else." McKenzie From Page 1 "All McKenzie did was inform me of a possible wrong-doing," he said. "The defense is trying to make that effort look self-serving. But there has even been great pub licity lately, made by law enforce ment officials trying to get infor mation from citizens." Turner said the trial had origi nally been set to begin Monday, but was postponed due to the length of the hearing. Ford is one of two remaining defendants. He was indicted on a misdemeanor charge of gambling, a charge of engaging in organized criminal activity to promote gam bling, and a charge for carrying a prohibited weapon. Three of the men pleaded guilty to lesser charges, and Todd Russell Chapman pleaded guilty to gambling promotion. He was sentenced to six years probation and fined $7,500. Jack Baggerly and Jessie Jerkins pleaded guilty to misde meanor charges of possessing gambling paraphernalia. Rudell Poehl is the other re maining defendant.
