Youngsters carry Aggies to 45-7 victory over Tigers
By Scott Wudel
The Battalion
The Texas A&M football team looked
as if it hadn't missed a beat Saturday.
More than eight months after it
trounced Brigham Young 65-14 in the Sea
World Holiday Bowl, the Aggies were
still in stride, rolling over Louisiana State
University 45-7 in the season opener at
Kyle Field.
A&M, 1-0, handed the Tigers their
second loss of the season and spoiled for
mer A&M player and assistant coach
Curley Hallman's homecoming.
A&M's youth was forced to step in
during the second quarter. The Aggies,
minus two starters, senior quarterback
Bucky Richardson and junior fullback
Doug Carter, reeled off 28 points during
the second quarter to give A&M a lead it
would never relinquish.
Junior Kent Petty and redshirt fresh
man Jeff Granger took over the quarter-
backing chores, while freshmen Rodney
Thomas and Clif Groce replaced the in
jured fullback Carter.
A&M redshirt freshman tailback
Greg Hill exploded for 212 yards and
two touchdowns while carrying the
backfield load in his first game in an
A&M uniform.
Hill's numbers broke the NCAA
record for most yards gained by a fresh
man playing in his first game. Former
Baylor running back Walter Abercrombie
held the previous record since Oct. 21,
1978, after rushing for 207 yards against
Texas A&M.
A&M head football coach R.C.
Slocum said he was proud of the way the
team pulled together after the loss of
Richardson and Carter.
"We had a lot of enthusiasm,"
Slocum said. "I said all along that we
have a lot of young, eager guys and that I

Redshirt freshman Greg Hill stole the show touchdowns on 30 carries. Hill broke the NCAA

Hill reaches
new heights
By Steve O'Brien
The Battalion
For A&M football fans, the anticipa
tion is over and the Greg Hill show has
begun. For Hill, the talking has ended
and the records have begun to fall.
Hill, a 5-11 190 pound redshirt fresh
man, rushed for 212 yards on 30 carries
in the Aggies' victory over LSU Satur
day. Hill's performance broke the
NCAA yardage record for a freshman
debut.
Hill also broke the A&M record for
most yards in a game by a freshman. The
record was held by former A&M All-
America running back Darren Lewis,
who rushed for 194 yards on 16 carries
against TCU in 1987. Lewis' mark
was set in the Aggies' tenth game of the
season.
It took Lewis, the Southwest Confer
ences all-time leading rusher, more than
half of the 1987 season to break his first
record. It took Hill little more than two
hours.
Hill's performance was a surprise to
him.
"I didn't even know anything about
an NCAA record," he said. "I didn't
even know I had a 200-yard game. I
thought I had like a 130 or 140.
"At halftime I thought I had about 30
yards, then they gave the quickie stats.
They said I had a 98 yards on 15 carries,
and I said, 'hey, two more yards and I'll
be over a 100. That'll be alright.'"
But Hill would get much more than
just over 100 yards. Besides breaking the
yardage record, the tailback from Carter
High School in Dallas, ran for two touch
downs, including a 35-yard dash.
"I didn't even know who's record it
was at first then they told me I had a
chance to break (Lewis') record," he said.
"So I said, 'hey, let's go for it.' (The assis
tant coaches) told me I needed four
yards to break the A&M record. Then I
came out, and I thought that was it.
Then they came over and told me I need
ed four more yards to break the NCAA
record."
Hill's performance comes after all the
