Police seek
computer
burglars
Computerland on Harvey
Road in College Station was the
target of burglars twice in a three
month period.
It is believed that both burglar
ies were committed in the early
morning hours. The first burglary
occurred on June 11. The second
was committed on Aug. 14.
In each case, the thieves broke
out the glass of one of the front
doors, entered the building, then
quickly grabbed and disconnected
eight computers, three laser print
ers and miscellaneous computer
accessories before leaving the
stores through the hole in the
glass.
The value of the stolen items
was estimated to be more than
$50,000.
This week the College Station
Police Department and Crime
Stoppers need your help in identi
fying the people responsible for
these burglaries.
If you have information that
could be helpful, call Crime Stop
pers at 775-TIPS.
If your call leads to an arrest an
grand jury indictment. Crime
Stoppers will pay you up to $1,000
in cash.

Professors develop engineering ethics program
By Karen Praslicka
The Battalion
Texas A&M engineering students are
becoming more aware of ethical issues in
the engineering field because of a program
being developed by several University pro
fessors.
The program involves guest lectures in
10 undergraduate courses in mechanical,
.chemical and civil engineering. The lectures
introduce situations taken from actual inci
dents that students might encounter on the
job, such as what to do if an employer asks
them to falsify data.
Dr. Michael Rabins, a mechanical engi
neering professor, is one of the principal in
vestigators of the project and came up with
the idea for it.
Rabins said he got the idea through his
experience in the area of professionalism
and ethics. For the last 10 years, Rabins has
studied and lectured on the subject.
Rabins said he saw professionalism and
ethics as a subject he could "dive into" after
spending 14 years in administrative jobs, in
cluding heading A&M's mechanical engi
neering department.
"I saw the field of ethics has been grow
ing for students, faculty and the public," he
said. "And this kind of thing is happening
at other schools.
"Having done it I don't regret it at all,"
he continued. "It might be the most impor
tant thing I've done in my career."
