’We GOT our MTV!’
College Station audience turns "Street Party" into victory celebration
By Rob Newberry
"When people say they want their
MTV, it means they want their rock'n'roll,"
MTV VJ Martha Quinn said.
"Rock'n'roll has always had a ren
egade spirit, and MTV is bringing that
spirit into the '90s,"
Quinn said.
Quinn and a crew
from MTV brought
that spirit to College
Station on Friday
evening to record an
episode of the
network's tape-de
layed live show,
"Street Party."
Under a banner
reading "We GOT
our MTV," localband
The Change enter
tained an audience of
over 7,000 in the park
ing lot in front of The
Eage, the dance club
which hosted the
event.
The Change got
the audience excited
around 8:30 p.m. with
a slew of cover mate
rial, ranging from
R.E.M. to Pink Floyd.
When Quinn showed
upa littleafter 10, theband ripped through
MTV's theme; Quinn stepped on stage
and cheered the audience on.
Offstage, Quinn was surrounded by
mobs of screaming, pushing fans. Secu
rity at The Edge was beefed up for the
event, but squeezing the MTV celebrity
through the dance club was truly a feat.
The show kicked off just hours after
TCA Cable announced it was reinstating
MTV as part of its basic service before the
fall semester began. The crowd at The
Edge turned the "Street Party" into a vic
tory celebration after finding out they that
would indeed "get their MTV."
MTV, however, played down the TCA
decision, refusing to comment about the
recent pressure on the cable company by
local activists, and stating that the "Street
Party" was not a result of the situation.
"We made sure that it was non-politi
cal and not TCA-focused," John
Whittington, manager of The Edge, said.
"It was just an MTV ’Street Party.’"
Whittington said
that representa
tives from MTV
approached him
with the idea on
July 5. "They had
been in town look
ing around, seeing
how people re
sponded to the
cable situation,"
Whittington said.
The event itself,
however, was not
confirmed until last
Wednesday, giving
Whittington only
three days to pre
pare. Extra mea
sures were taken by
The Edge and the
city to keep the
party running
smooth.
"Everybody
(that worked at the
club) was sched
uled, and I hired 20
more guys," Whittington said. "Close to
50 working, plus I had four College Sta
tion police officers."

Acting by Ford, Allen, Nunn saves sentimental 'Regarding Henry f
By Julia E.S. Spencer
Director Mike Nichols'
("The Graduate") new film
"Regarding Henry" has all the
gloss of an "A" theatrical
movie, but unfortunately only
the substance of a paint-by
numbers TV movie.
Movie Review
Although the acting is
more than competent, and the
cinematography and produc
tion values equally fine, the
story is predictable, and frequently
descends into treacly sentimental
ity. Instead of taking some real
chances with the plot and the audi
ence, and offering some new in
sights, Jeff Abrams' script skims
over the same familiar ground in
much the same manner as those
formulaic disease/disaster-of-the-
week movies.
That's not to say "Regarding
Henry" is boring or unwatchable.
It's not, any more than a "Ryan
White Story "-type movie. The film
is actually fairly enthralling and
sometimes very moving. But like
most TV movies of thte kind, it is
the story which is inherently en
tertaining, not the treatment of it.
The "Henry” in the title is
Henry Turner (Harrison Ford) a
go-for-the-throat’New York trial
lawyer whohas few scruples when
it comes to getting his clients off.
When he's home, which is rarely,
he is sternly authoritarian with his
11-year-old daughter Rachel
(Mikki Allen), and cool and busi
ness-like with his wife Sarah
(Annette Bening).
At the beginning of the film,
he has just successfully defended a
hospital against a suit by a diabetic
man by destroying the man's char
acter and credibility. At home, he
is more preoccupied with the looks
of the furniture than with his
family's emotional well-being. Just
when you are getting disgusted
with this man's shallowness and
insensitivity, he is shot in the head
and chest during a convenience
store hold-up.
At the hospital, the head doc
tor informs Sarah that although
one bullet entered the right frontal
lobe, which contains redundant
systems, the other temporarily
stopped the flow of blocxi to his
bram. In other words, Henry has
forgotten everything - speaking,
walking, and even his family - and
must start learning again from
scratch.
With the help of his new friend
Bradley (Bill Nunn), a gregarious.
ever-cheerful physical thera
pist, Henry begms learning
now to walk, and when he fi
nally regains his speech, mim
ics Bradley's amusingly color
ful vernacular.
To his family's relief, he
has also forgotten his old self;
the new Henry is a kinder, gen
tler, more cnild-like person
who is not afraid of expressing
his feelings or his fears. He
and Rachel enjoy a new-found
rapport, and the formerly
dour, serious little gir l begins
to smile again.
When he returns to work,
however, and begins looking

The central message of the film,
namely that even in adults, playfulness
and a childlike openness and innocence
are valuable traits, has been dealt with
before.
