Grants allow access time for computer By Susan Maguire The Battalion rant for some Texas A new gre A&M students provides access to the University's supercom puter, bypassing much of the red tape students have had to face when using the facility. Victor Hazelwood, a systems analyst with the center, said stu dents first need to get a faculty or staff sponsor to receive the re search grant. "The grant allows students to get computer time for research that a faculty member might not be involved in," Hazelwood said. Students otherwise will have to wait to use one of the slower computers. The supercomputer, called a Cray Y-MP, is approximately three times faster man the VAX computers which students pres ently are allowed to use. The Cray is located in the Zachry En gineering Center. Hazelwood said the program was set up to increase use of the supercomputer. The grants be came available in April 1991, and 22 grants have been given. Forty graduate student re search grants are allocated for each fiscal year, with a maxi mum of 20 hours per grant. Each hour available costs $1,000, and the money comes out of a gen eral University fund. Other grants for computer time are designated by the sepa rate colleges who contributed money to buy the computer in 1989. Time, equal to the balance of each college's contribution, is given out at the beginning of each fiscal year. Hazelwood said computer time is valuable because the CPU — or central processing unit — works faster than the older VAX system. A&M prepares warning system By Robin Goodpaster The Battalion Texas A&M's Safety and Health Office is taking steps to institute an early warning sys tem to prepare the University for disasters such as tornados, chemical spills and fires. Dan Mizer, chairman of the task force looking into the early warning system, said some of the factors involved when con sidering such a system are how to warn the public and how to educate the University commu nity for emergency situations. Mizer said the committee has only met twice since it has been formed. He said one of the rea sons for this infrequency is get ting people together during the summer. The committee consists of both students and faculty includ ing Robert Stiteler, director of t Be Student Body President Stephen Ruth. Other committee members are Angie Saylor and Lori Peter son, directors of the Residence Hall Association. Mizer said the committee has not yet settled on any one sys tem, although it has considered many ideas. One such option is a telephone network system to link the entire campus. Another system being considered is a tor nado-type warning siren. Ccmpi GIVE ★ BLOOD ¥■ Aggie Blood Drive June 24 - 28th 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Bloodmobiles at SBISA & Academic Plaza Hey Aggies!!!
