Roberts plays f unschooled, tough-but-vulnerable' role in tear-jerker 'Dying Young* 'Jungle Fevt gives view of racial tension Continued from page 3 Continued from page 3 continuously peering through " ilary, syr ‘ doorways at Hilary, symbolizin; nd< Victor's isolatio and exclusion, and his longing to be a participant in life, not just a voyeur. Richard Friedenberg has done an excellent job of transforming Marti Leimbach's novel, written as an inner monologue from Hilary's point of view, into an evocative, dramatic screenplay. The Battalion Roberts again shows her im pressive range as the feisty-yet- nurturing Hilary, giving herself generously to the camera's end lessly probing close-ups, convey ing every ounce of pain and joy with her expressively plastic fea tures. Campbell Scott's performance is equally stunning as nis character goes from extreme sickness to ath letic vigorousness, shyness to ex troversion, desperate need to smug arrogance. There are a couple of painfully realistic scenes where he tries to prove his worth by demon strating his knowledge of artsy trivia while watching Jeopardy with Hilary and Gordon. Scott is definitely an actor to watch. "Dying Young" is well made and while deliberately paced and certainly not perfect, it is for the most part an extremely moving and convincing character study. I could be very picky and point out some plot loopholes, but they would give too much away, so I won't. There is evidence, how ever, as entertainment rags have been reporting, that the ending was tampered with after test audiences found it too sad. Even the title was under consideration for change when studio execs were fearful moviegoers might stay away, thinking Roberts' character dies. Whatever its faults, the quiet, thoughtful nature of the film will be a welcome respite from the slam- bang violence of the majority of summer films, and is a must for Julia-watchers. This is a perfect date movie, but be sure to wear waterproof mascara and bring plenty o' Kleenex - you'll need it!
