Arms sales
to Mideast
continue
WASHINGTON (AP) — The
Bush administration announced
new Persian Gulf arms deals Tues
day and Defense Secretary Dick
Cheney said President Bush's plea
for Middle East arms control does
not mean America will stop sup
plying the region's weapons.
"We simply cannot fall into the
trap of ... (saying) that arms con
trol means we don't provide any
arms to the Middle East," Cheney
told reporters aboard his plane as
he returned to Washington from a
10-day trip to Europe, Israel and
Egypt.
A senior Defense Department
official, speaking on the condition
of anonymity, said the administra
tion had agreed to sell 20 Apache
attack helicopters to the United
Arab Emirates and as many as six
unspecified military helicopters to
Bahrain.

Thornburgh
plans to run
for Congress
WASHINGTON (AP) — Presi
dent Bush said Tuesday that At
torney General Dick Thornburgh
will run for the Senate from Penn
sylvania but
will remain in
the Cabinet
through the
end of July.
Bush made
the announce
ment at a Cab
inet meeting
where Thorn-
burgh was
seated at his
side. Other attorney general,
Cabinet mem- plans to run for
b e r s a p Senate,
plauded the news.
It is rare, if not unprecedented,
for a sitting Cabinet member to
run for Congress.
Thornburgh will run to fill the
unexpired term of Republican
John Heinz, who was killed in a
plane crash April 4.
The president said he had asked
Thornburgh to remain in the Cab
inet and to continue working on
key legislation, such as civil rights
and a crime bill.
"We are going to miss his wis
dom and his support," Bush said.
Thornburgh, a two-term former
Pennsylvania governor, was an
original member of Bush's Cab
inet.
Thornburgh would not stay in
office if he became the party's offi
cial candidate, said a Thornburgh
political associate, who spoke on
condition of anonymity.
"If he is a candidate for Senate,
he will not be the attorney gener
al," the associate said. "If he be
comes a candidate, it will be when
his party nominates him."
Dick Thornburgh,
