plished its goal," Fish said. "It's
the only organization of its kind
that's met its goal."
The foundation's main em
phasis is researching birth de
fects, babies born with drug ad
dictions or AIDS and babies
weighing less than five pounds
at birth.
About 40,000 babies are bom
annually with these potentially
life-threatening problems.
The United States ranks 40th
out of all the countries in the
world in the number of babies
bom with birth defects, she said.
"We've put men on the
moon," she said. "You'd think
with all we've accomplished we
could do something."
As part of the opening of the
Texas World Speedway July 6,
the March of Dimes is having a
5K run to raise money.

Protesters
rally against
abortion pill
PARIS (AP) — Several hun
dred people on Saturday pro
tested the use of the controver
sial French abortion pill, which
has been under renewed scru
tiny since the recent death of a
young woman who received the
treatment.
The anti-abortion activists
gathered outside the headquar
ters of the pill's manufacturer,
Roussel-Uclaf, and demanded
that the drug — known as RU-
486 — be banned in France and
other countries.
Roussel-Uclaf is a subsidiary
of the German company
Hoechst. The protesters
marched later to the German
Embassy to demonstrate against
the drug there.
They compared the drug to
the Zyklon B gas, manufactured
by Hoechst's predecessor LG.
Farben, that killed millions of
Jews and other people in the
Nazi gas chambers during World
War II.
The protest was a part of
World Day for Life activities.
Anti-abortion protests also were
planned in Tokyo; Melbourne,
Australia; Oslo, Norway; Copen
hagen, Denmark; and Bratislava,
Czechoslovakia, organizers said.
On April 20, France's Health
Ministry put new restrictions on
the pill's use following the first
death of a woman under treat
ment. The ministry banned reg
ular smokers and women over 35
from using RU-486 and reduced
by half the dose of a synthetic
prostaglandin hormone used in
conjunction with the pill.
Defense forces under suspicion
ANC accuses South Africa
of causing black violence
SOWETO, South Africa (AP)
— The African National Con
gress on Saturday accused the
nation's defense forces of train
ing ANC rivals as part of a plot
to stir up black violence and im
prove the image of the white mi
nority.
ANC Deputy President Nel
son Mandela and Secretary-Gen
eral Alfred Nzo leveled angry ac
cusations at the government in
separate speeches.
Nzo told reporters at the Man
dela home that the ANC had
learned of a terror campaign that
included plans to kill ANC lead
ers and was sanctioned by "si
nister" elements in the defense
forces.
An ANC statement accused
unidentified agitators of plan
ning the campaign to ruin a
peace agreement with the ANC's
rival, the Inkatha Freedom
the Inkatha Freedom Pc
arty.
A defense forces spokesman
Party, in hopes of making it ap
pear blacks are unable to govern
themselves.
"Information gathered indi
cates there are massive plans to
attack communities and assassi
nate prominent ANC members,"
Nzo said. "General mobilization
is taking place for attacks in the
townships, trains and factories."
The ANC did not say where its
information came from or offer
specific proof.
Law and Order Ministry
spokesman Craig Kotze asked
the ANC to provide it with de
tails so police could investigate
the claims. The ministry has
denied past ANC allegations
that security forces instigated
unrest.
The ANC claimed Saturday
that Inkatha brigades had been
deployed in violence-torn areas
after receiving military training
from members of the defense
forces.
"A sinister hand of the third
force has become apparent," the
ANC said, referring to an el
ement in the government that
the ANC says wants to under
mine President F.W. de Klerk's
reforms dismantling apartheid.
"The intention ... is to create,
where it does not exist, and to
exacerbate where it does exist,
conflict between the ANC and

In a speech to a congress of the
National Union of Mineworkers,
Mandela accused the govern
ment of waging war on the ANC
and said it wanted to create divi
sions among blacks.
"It presents the picture that
South Africa can only know sta
bility and prosperity with whites
in control," he said.
Mandela accused the media of
complicity, saying it ignored in
volvement of security forces.
Inkatha leader Mangosuthu
Buthelezi met with Mandela on
Jan. 29, and the two signed a
peace accord.
