should try fishing at night, when
the air is cooler and the lake less
crowded.
During the dog days of sum
mer, fish become slow and inac
tive during most of the daylight
hours. But as the sun dips below
the treetops, the recreationalists
head for home and the fish come
out to play.
Anglers willing to set aside a
Saturday night could find this as
the most relaxing and productive
method of fishing they have ever
experienced.The wind tends to
die down at night and there is
usually only a handfull of boats
on the entire lake.
Crappie and catfish top the
popularity chart among noctur
nal anglers while bass fishermen
can have great success probing
the shallows with a plastic
worm.
Crappie congregate around
cJummer is almost here.
Temperatures rise, frustations
soar and fishing slows down.
Most anglers accept the fact
that fishing slows down during
the summer months. Good fish
ermen change their stratagies to
suit the fishing conditions. Often
times, the night will offer better
fishing activity than during the
daylight hours.
How often have you been on
Lake Sommerville, and had a 17-
foot Glastron zoom by pulling
two people waging hydroslide
wars?
Instead of cursing the blister-
any type of structure found in
deep water during the blistering
summer months. Sunken brush
piles and trees that line creek
channels in the main lake often
attract large schools of these
panfish delecacies.
A good depth finder is impari-
tive for locating these areas. If
you do not own such equip
ment, you might want to try
sinking some brush of your own
in about 20 feet of water.
Christmas trees arranged in a
square or rectangle work well for
this purpose.
Once you find a crappie hole
that suits to your liking, you will
need to begin setting up camp
for the night. A Coleman lantern
hung from a tree limb will pro
vide enough light to operate un
der. Be sure you have enough
food and beverages to last
through the night, to keep your
companions quiet.
Some sort of high intensity
light, such as a Q-beam, can be
helpful in finding your way
home if you decide to pack up
before sunrise. Stumps that were
not there at dusk have a way of
materializing when trying to
navigate out of a back cove on
your way home.
Make sure to have a couple of
minnow buckets filled before
leaving the boat ramp because 24
hour bait stores are hard to come
by. It would be a shame to run
out of shiners at 2 a.m., when
the fishing really starts to pick
up.
This brings up another point,
if the action is slow for the first
hour or so, wait it out. There are/
certain times when fish activity
will pick up and slow down.
Give the water a chance to cool
a bit after sunset. Then, hope
fully, the crappie will get a 1
more active.

Fishing Report
GIBBON'S CREEK- Recent rains have scattered fish. Some
bass are being taken on buzz-baits according to guide Dan
Clark. But for the most part, action has been slow, causing most
people to drive the extra miles to Fayette County.
SOMERVILLE- Dan Clark also reports good white bass
schooling on the lower end of the lake. Rat-L-Traps worked near
the surface are the most productive around the dam and over
flats. Diving birds and fisn breaking the surface will reveal the
schools' location.
LAKE CONROE- An 8 lb., 9 oz. bass took the money in the
KILT tournament over the weekend. Lynn Phillips reports most
fish are hitting Carolina-rigged, pumpkin-seed worms. Crappie
are improving up Caney Creek and around boat stalls. Large
yellow cats to 20 lbs. are coming from the Shiloh Shore Marina
pier. Water is in good shape.
FAYETTE COUNTY- Paul Place caught mainly slot fish
Tuesday on Slug-O's and ringworms in 5 to 8 feet of water over
grass beds. Dan Clark used Big Claw craw worms trying to catch
big fish and was rewarded with five over the 21 inch slot limit.
