Petty, the Mob's only signal
caller, finished the day 7 of 22 for
113yards and five interceptions.
The tandem of Jeff Granger
and Steve Emerson rotated at
quarterback for the winning
team. The tandem finished 6 of
17 for 60 yards and two intercep
tions.
Senior tailback Randy Sim
mons rushed for 73 yards on 14
carries and fullback Doug Carter
amassed 36 yards.
Slocum had Richardson sit out
of the scrimmage.
"I know what Bucky can do in
this situation, he would have
really upset the balance of the
teams with the experience he
has," Slocum said. "His team
would have had a marked ad
vantage."
Richardson couldn't help his
team watching from the side
lines.
"I wanted to be out there,"
Richardson said. "I satoutayear
and that was long enough-1
don't like bringing back bad
memories."
Smith, the winning coach,
said the scrimmage was a good
opportunity for some of the
younger A&M players.
"Some of the guys got some
good experience," Smith said
"It was an advantage formostof
the younger guys to get some
quality play.
The Strictly Business team
opened the scoring with two
field goals in the first half.

Lewis deserved higher draft
Continued from page 5
aren't necessarily A&M
supporters, might want to know
the status of one of the best
runners to ever play college
football.
When the first four rounds
were finished Sunday and
Darren hadn't been taken, l
thought of former A&M
linebacker Aaron Wallace.
Wallace, who now plays for
the Los Angeles Raiders, was a
player like Darren. The two
always seemed to play their best
when it meant the most.
Watching them play was the
reason why I became a fan of
A&M football.
Remember beating Houston
and Andre Ware in 1989 at Kyle
Field? Wallace and Lewis
showed what big-time players
can do in the national spotlight.
But Darren was more than just
a great runner. He was a player
wno conducted himself with
class — a rare quality in athletes
today.
A quiet man from Dallas
Carter, Darren entertained us for
four years, giving everything he
had, and last weekend he
received little credit for it.
If A&M had played better last
year and had made a run at the
national championship, Darren
would probably have teen a first
or second round pick.
Rumor has it that Darren
refused to run the 40-yard dash
for NFL scouts, making teams
question his speed and attitude
Can you blame him?
In the pros, the only concerns
size and speed. And with his
speed, which is not good fora
running back, it was probably
best that he didn't have a timed
run.
Even with his lack of break
away speed,jt was hard to
believe tearrts were passing up
Darren and picking players who
hadn't done half what he didia
college.
In the NFL draft, it sometimes
seems like teams make their
draft selection on what they
have on paper. Most of the time
that means an athlete's size,
speed and strength determine
how high he'll be selected.
But scouts can't measure hear
and it's hard for them to judge
ability. Sometimes the scouts
make mistakes on players
(they're the first ones to admit
it), and I think they did in
Darren's case.
I have no doubt that the Bears
making Darren the I6lstpick,
got the steal of the draft.
And when Darren surprises
everyone next year, maybe NE
teams will reconsider how the)’
rate players.
It took Galileo 16 years to master the universe.
You have one night.
It seems unfair. The genius had all that time. While you have a few
short hours to learn your sun spots from your satellites before the
dreaded astronomy exam.
On the other hand, Vivarin gives you the definite advantage. It helps
keep you awake and mentally alert for hours. Safely and conveniently. So
even when the subject matter’s dull, your mind will stay razor sharp.
If Galileo had used Vivarin, maybe he could have mastered the solar
system faster, too. Reyiw With VIVARIN!
