Young pitches during an extra inning game against the SWT Lady Bobcats Thursday. Young tossed a no-hitter in the second game of the doubleheader, which was the Lady Aggies last home for the year. Missy Young is queen of the hill. The softball hill, that is. By picking up 1-0 and 8-0 vic tories in Thursday's double- header for the Lady Aggies against Southwest Texas State, Young reached the 30-win pla teau for the season. The Bobcats dropped to 16-30 for the year. The first shutout for the Lady Ags (40-12) was an extra-inning pitcher's duel until the ninth. Dawn Wuthrich started things off with a bunt single off Bobcat loser Karen Taylor. After Mich elle Mayfield reached on an error that pushed Wuthrich to second, Jennifer McFalls singled home the winning run. Lady Aggie starting pitcher Dana Mitchell went seven and one-third innings, scattering five hits and walking one. She was relieved by Young in the eighth with one out and received a no decision. "We've worked really hard the last few days, and you can really see it," said Lady Aggie head coach Bob Brock. "It's a shame that Dana pitched so well the first game and we can't seem to get any runs. The bats started making noise early in Game Two, comple menting a no-hitter by Young. Mayfield had a one-out Bunt single in the first to get the bal rolling. McFalls doubled to send May field home for a 1-0 lead. Meanwhile, Young struck two | out in the first to start her domi nance. The second inning saw| Rhonda Halpert single before, two outs later, Barbara Kajs sin gled to put runners at first and second. A two-run error by Bobcat I first-baseman Terrie Keeling] made the lead 3-0. In the third, McFalls singled j and moved to second on a F cat error on a Karen Kalhoeferl ground ball. The runners tagge to second and third on a fly oi by Halpert. Stacey Lucas then singled I bring the runners home foraM | lead. The onslaught ended in the | sixth with the Aggies scoring three more runs. The Bobcats decided not continue the game in the sixl and are now 1-25 against the I Lady Ags in the series. Young ended her no-hitter | with eight strikeouts in six in nings. "Tm always pleased with ante hitter," Young said. "I felt pretty good all the way." "Missy was able to rest,' Brock said. "She had a little bitof a sore arm and she came bad and threw real strong." New coaches adjusting to Aggie system By Scott Wudel The Battalion Three new coaches are spend ing spring practice adjusting to A&M while their players are busy adjusting to them. David Culley, Shawn Slocum and Trent Walters are three new faces on Texas A&M head foot ball coach R.C. Slocum's re vamped coaching staff. Culley will fill the gap at re ceiver coach, Walters will work with the secondary, and the young Slocum will work with the tight ends. Slocum said it won't take long for the three new coaches to get comfortable with the team. "With football coaches, the kind of guys we hire here, its a matter of converting terminolo- the elder Slocum said, hey know the plays that we run." Culley came to A&M from the University of Texas-El Paso. He considers the change a good ca reer move. "This is a unique place, a won derful place," Culley said. "In this profession you want to get to the point where every time ou go out to play a game you ave a chance to win — this is one of the few places." The new coach has one of the hardest tasks during spring — mmmmm :« * , Walters said a coaching philos ophy based on his military bad ground should fit in well at | A&M. "If we 'prepare proper pnoi | planning, it will prevent poe:| performance.'" Effort is the secret to Slocum's i coaching philosophy. Whether you play on otfensa, defense, special teams, it ultimate effort," Slocum "Effort is bottomline." DOUGLAS PILS/The Battalion New receivers coach David Culley throws a pass to redshirt freshman Ryan Matthews during A&M’s spring drills. Culley, Trent Walters (secondary) and oachinq staff. Shawn Slocum (tight ends) are new additions to the Aggie coaching Slocum took the job under te father after coaching at F burgh. He said working forhii | father was no different working for anyone else. "He's dad when I see hir the field," he said. "But when| it's time to work, he's the best.” The younger Slocum is a 198 graduate of A&M. Taking the jot I here was like coming homefo: him. r h putting together a receiver core that has a total of one season of experience among them. He recalled the first day he saw improvement in one of his players — redshirt freshman Brian Mitchell. "That was the first time since I've been here I felt like I had coached, like I had earned my money," he said. Culley looks for consistency while teaching the fundamen tals. "At UTEP I always had guys with experience, I didn't have to coach them," he explained. "I just made sure I didn't mess them up." Walters coached at University of Louisville before moving to Aggieland almost three weeks ago. "I'm pleased with the players development," Walters said. "They had to accustom them selves to a new defensive backs' coach, and I had to learn them." "It's really a lot of fun because| I bleed maroon," Slocum said/ want to do a good job, but being I at A&M makes it something! special." Slocum doesn't mind beini the youngest coach on the stal because he can learn from tlif[ other coaches' years of expen j ence. "That's where it's beneficial tel me," he said. "I learn somethin;| new everyday." TOP $’s FOR BOOKS and a SPIN ON THE WHEEL What a deal!
