Archaeologist explores war dangers to Iraqi digs Continued from page 1 time," Gibson said. Gibson said his first excava tion in Nippur was in 1964 when he was a graduate stu dent at the University of Chi cago, where he received his master's and doctorate de grees. Nippur was the site of the first archaeological expedition in the Middle East by any American inshtition, he said. Gibson said from 1889 to 1899, the University of Penn sylvania, under the command of John P. Peters, led an exca vation at Nippur. Clay tablets inscribed with myths, epics of creations, mathematical texts, proverbs, dictionaries, etc. were among the many artifacts that were uncovered. The University of Pennsyl vania and the University of Chicago later led a joint expe dition to Nippur from 1948 to 1952, Gibson said. Since 1952, the University of Chicago alone has had 19 seasons of ex cavations in Nippur. During its 11th season in 1972, Gibson became director of the excava tions. Gibson said when he took over he decided to turn from the religious sites in Nippur and try to find the governmen tal areas. He said he wanted to reconstruct the history of a site and how it functioned. In his search to find an ad ministrative building, Gibson said he found another temple. Gibson said his last excava tion temple was last year from January through March. He said they have uncovered at least one quarter of the temple, which is estimated to be 100 meters by 40 meters. "We know the area is impor tant in terms of medicine," Gibson said. "If we can un cover it level by level, we will be able to tell more about an ancient Mesopotamian temple than anyone else has." Gibson said he hopes he will be allowed by Iraqi authorities to return to Nippur for further excavations. He said they have always been granted permis sion in the past, even when U.S.-Iraq relations were not so good. "Iraq has always differen tiated between scholarship and politics," Gibson said. "But then again the United States has never been at war with the Iraq." RING DANCE!!!
