He won a Michigan high school state championship in 1977. Johnson was the catalyst of a Michigan State team that, with the help of Jay Vincent and Greg Kelser, won the national championship in 1979. In his first season in the NBA (1980) as a Los Angeles Laker, he poured in 42 points and grabbed 17 rebounds — in Kareem Abdul- Jabbar's absence — in the sixth and final game of the 1980 championship series. Proving his versatility, he played all three positions. Since that first amazing NBA campaign, he has been compared with none other than Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics, statistically and influentially. Larry Bird was on the losing Indiana State team that Johnson helped beat in 1979, but Bird was the Rookie of the Year in the NBA during the same season Johnson's Lakers won the title. The comparisons go on and on. Many say that Magic cries too much about being fouled. But so do Michael Jordan, Karl Malone and Charles Barkley.
