Inquiry into refinery blasts begins
SWEENY (AP) — Investiga
tors from Phillips Petroleum's
Oklahoma headquarters arrived
Sunday at the Old Ocean refin
ery, where a series of explosions
rocked the plant and injured two
workers.
"The fire's out now, and it's a
little easier for them to get in
there and figure out what happe
ned," plant spokesman Bill
Wicker said.
Wicker said no possible cause
had been determined for the ex
plosions and fires, which burned
themselves out at 5:45 a.m.
The initial explosion occurred
about 2:25 p.m. Saturday in the
heavy oil desulphurization unit,
with secondary explosions at
2:55 p.m. and 3:12 p.m.
The unit, used in refining
crude oil into gasoline and other
petroleum products, was shut
down, along with two adjacent
units.
