"The B-2 gives us nothing we
didn't have in Iraq," Naglersaid.
Spence disagreed, claiming
the Stealth bomber can locate
moving or location-unknown
targets that a missile or single
non-stealth plane could not find.
Nagler said any type of plane
has trouble locating a moving
target.
The B-2, he said, does not of
fer an advantage over other air
craft in finding targets.
Spence said pilots of non
stealth bombers need heavy mis
sile and air backup to accomplish
their missions, while Stealth
bomber pilots need no support.
"An enemy pilot has a better
chance of spotting a B-2 out his
windshield than picking it up
radar," Spence said. "The cost is
high, but you're paying for per
formance."
He added that the Soviet
Union has increased its nuclear
arsenal by 25 percent over the
past six years, and U.S. defenses
must plan accordingly.
"The B-2 can overfly almost
any area in the world without
being detected," Spence said
"We have to plan for and
with Soviet capabilities."
Nagler said ne is not optimistic
about the future of the Stealth
bomber program.
"B-2 advocates have a tough
road to hoe, to show the B-2 h
worth the money it costs," hi
said.
