[McOonaurs ■ ® McDonalds Salutes Teaching Excellence McDonald's Restaurants of Bryan/College Station announces their Teaching Assistant's recognition program. Each month a selected number of assistants will be chosen from their departments for providing outstanding services in teaching and research. McDonald's will honor each assistant by awarding them with a $400 scholarship, along with recognition in the Battalion. McDonald's salutes these individuals for their teaching excellence. Congratula tions! Brian Shaffer is a Master's student who teaches introductory anthropology courses. His interest in the subject, particularly in zooarchaeology, is con tagious-one student writing in support of Shaffer's nomination even switched his major to anthropol ogy after taking Shaffer's Introduction to Archaeol ogy . As another student eloquently pu t it, "He grasps the students' attention and suspends it on a rope constructed of interest and relevance." Students applaude his "down-to-earth" teaching style and his respect for their opinions. Leslie Sogandares is also a Ph.D. student in En glish. While fulfilling regular graduate commitments, she volunteers as a co-director of Englishe's new Writing Center, designed to help students with writ ing difficulties. Like Purinton, Sogandareshas taught numerous sections of freshman English and Techni cal Writing. Students from several of her classes wrote in appreciation of her patience and under standing as a teacher. One student said, "Ms. Songandares is one of the finest instructors I have had at Texas A&M." Lydia Andrade is a Ph.D. student in political science. She has served as a teaching or research assistant in several courses. Last year Andrade taught POLS 207, State and Local Government, a required course for all students. As one professor noted in support of Andrade's nomination, it is sometimes difficult for even more experienced teachers to motivate a "captive" audience. How ever, students in Andrade's section of 207 praised her ability to keep the class interesting and her encouragement of student participation in a class of 250 people. "I loved the class I thought I'd hate," one student explained. Marjean Purinton plans to complete her Ph.D. in English this year. Before beginning graduate work at Texas A&M, Purinton taught English at Caddo Mag net High School in Shreveport, Louisiana, and in honor of her wo»-k there, was named U.S. Distinguished Teacher by President Reagan at a White House din ner. She has taught several sections of freshman English and Technical Writing. Compassionate, in telligent, and challenging are words commonly used by students to describe Purinton and her teaching style. One student noted, "She exemplifies all of the qualities I respect in a teacher." Checks presented by Mr. Phil Springer-Owner/Operator of B/CS McDonalds
