boatloads of bass. That
is what used to happen every
Spring on the Trinity river above
Lake Livingston.
Literally boatloads of white
bass were taken from a 40-mile
stretch of river between
Highway 21 in Midway and
Highway 7 before the 25 fish-
per-day limit went into effect.
iven with the new law, an ice
chest can get mighty full in these
parts.
Lake Livingston has the
reputation of being the premier
white bass lake in Texas. Every
Spring, all these fish leave the
main lake and head up the
Trinity river with one thing on
their mind — spawning.
Usually this ritual begins
around the first part of February
March. During years of heavy
rainfall, such as this one, the run
could go on through April.
Right now, the river is low and
g reen, which is no problem for a
at bottom jon boat with a small
outboard engine, but this could
pose a threat for some of the
larger bass rigs.These big boats
will work fine on the river as
long as you do not mind a few
battle scars on the paint and
some nicks on your lower unit.
Unfortunately, the Trinity is
known for its shallow water
shoals and numerous brush
piles, which make great habitat
tor white bass but trouble for a
170-horsepower Evinrude.
The trick to locating the fish is
to find clear, calm water up one
of the many creeks that feed the
river. It is important to probe
deep into these creeks in order to
fincl this type of water. This is
where a jon boat will come in
handy.
Once you locate a promising
spot, work the area with small
white or chartreuse roadrunner-
type jigs with a soft, curly tail.
These will allow you to cover a
lot more water in a shorter
period of time than by using live
minnows. It would be a good
idea to take along plenty of jigs
since hang ups tend to occur
often.
Ken Huffman is a familiar face
on the river and he practically
lives in this region from
December to May. If anyone
knows the upper stretches of the
Trinity, it is this man. He reports
this week that Henderson creek
was holding clear water as of
Wednesday but recent rains
could cloud it.
Huffman's two-man party
boated 50 whites this week with
most coming from slack water
eddies. Each spot has only been
yielding four or five fish so he
recommends that after you catch
a few fish from one place, it is
time to move on.
With all the rain we had earlier
this season, the fish have been a
little late with their spawn and
Huffman believes that fishing
should continue to be good for at
least a few more weeks, as long
as the rain holds off.
Lake Livingston should begin
clearing up in another week or
two, just in time for the white
bass to move back to the main
lake. Once it settles, the fish will
go into a feeding frenzy in the
open water. For about five
weeks, the fish will school up
and attempt to satisfy a hunger
that was built up by the previous
months' activities.
This is the same thing that
happens annually at Welch Park.
To get to the Trinity river, take
Highway 21 out of Bryan to the
town of Midway. Charlton's
Garage will be on the left side of
the street (look for the Gulf
sign). Stop in and pay him for
the use of his ramp and he will
give directions to it.
When
; a trip to the
Trinity, call Ken Huffman's 24-
hour "White Bass Hotline" to
find out where the fish are. He
updates it every other day or so
and the number is (713) 723-
8340.
The fish are there, but findin;
them take lots of gas and lots o
time. Once you fill an ice chest
with a few dozen white bass, it
will be worth the trip.

Tarkanian's top six or seven
players get most of the playing
time.
When the subs do get to play,
it's usually garbage time.
So, the Blue Devils have to do
one thing to win: get UNLV's
starting five off the court.
They can accomplish this four
ways:
1) blow-up the UNLV team
plane. This is a good plan, but
the tight security around airports
with the recent world events
makes this plan difficult to com
plete.
2) blow-up UNLV's team bus
en route to the stadium. Another
good idea and should be given
marks for creativity, but it would
be too obvious who committed
the crime. And the Duke fan
Continued from page 9
who stepped forward to help his
team win would have to watch
the game from behind bars.
3) give the Rebel's bus driver
falsified direction to the stadium.
Again, good creativity and in
genuity, but it wouldn't work.
Although some people think of
the UNLV players as just dumb
jocks, they have an uncanny
ability to find the basket, even
from miles away. They can sense
a basketball court and would
know if the bus was headed in
the wrong direction.
4) get at least three of the five
UNLV starters into foul trouble.
This is the most legal and ethical
of all Duke's options, but it's also
the least likely to happen.
Fishing Report
GIBBON'S CREEK- Guide Clark Wendlant reports the lake
was slow until the beginning of the week but, two 10- pounders
were hauled out over the weekend. Lizards and Buzz baits have
drawn the most strikes now that the fish are returning to their
nests in the shallows. Fishing is expected to pick up witn the full
moon Saturday.
SOMERVILLE- The spillway continues to produce good
numbers of stripers. The next toughest thing to finding an open
spot on the bank to fish from is finding what the fish are hungry
for. One day they want red jigs and the next they might want
yellow. The only way to figure out what they want is to find
someone with a nice stringer and ask what they are using. There
is an 18-inch minimum length on stripers.
pie
LIVINGSTON- Bethy Creek is still reporting excellent crap*
ie action. Rose Cantu landed a $1000 fisn from their bank this
weekend in the ongoing Crappiethon.
LAKE CONROE- Billy Mills from Pier 105 Marina reports
great fishing on the lake. Male bass are in shallow water from 2*
10 feet. Carolina rigged worms in a smoke-blue or june bug color
seem to be the most effective. White bass are being caught in
about 25 feet of water on Lightning spoons with flash tails.
Crappie are coming from creek channels on chartreuse jigs with
red neads.
