Lawmakers consider DWI bill requiring automatic license revocation, 2 days in jail
AUSTIN (AP) — People con
victed for the first time of
drunken driving would face at
least two days in jail if given pro
bation under a bill considered by
lawmakers Tuesday.
That provision is part of a
comprehensive revision of the
driving while intoxicated laws in
Texas that was sent to a subcom
mittee of the Senate Criminal
Justice Committee.
Sen. Carlos Truan, D-Corpus
Christi, said increasing penalties
and establishing an automatic re
vocation of a person's drivers li
cense for DWI will reduce the
number of alcohol-related traffic
deaths and make the state eligi
ble for about $16 million in fed
eral funds.
Under Truan's bill, a person
arrested for DWI or who refuses
to take a breath test would be
forced to win an administrative
hearing to prevent his or her li
cense from being revoked for at
least 90 days.
