To be concise, it looks like Fred Sanford's garage. Some of us can't always ride out to Treehouse Village to hoop, or afford to go to Gold's Gym to "get big." So, administration and offi cials, don't tie down the non- scholarship athlete with poor weight facilities and few basket ball pickup hours during the week. Build, adminstration, build! In case A&M officials didn't realize, there are more than 40,000 people here, thousands of which like to play basketball, lift weights and do an assortment of other athletic activities. And as a school with a solid academic purpose and a commit tment to all-around success and well-being, A&M MUST provide the students with what they need, especially when it deals with recreation. The contrast between the foot ball team's Needham Steed Hu man Laboratory (the best and biggest college weight room in America) and the students' facili ties is demeaning. The Steed lab is beautiful, and it's a major reason A&M has such a solid, winning program year in and year out. The new arena being built will be a fantastic place to play bas ketball and other sports. But regular students need love too. So let's improve the facilities and allow the Aggie students to have fun at a gym, or weight room, they can be proud of. ance v nity i psic impact impact area." The C Racing to return to local raceway By Richard S. James The Battalion The roar of racing engines will be heard once again at Texas World Speedway later this year, the president of Ishin Speed Sport said Monday. Dick Respess said that Texas World Speed way, six miles south of College Station, will host several races this year, including a major stock car race in September. Respess is president of Ishin Speed Sport, which bought the motors- ports facility in January. The speedway is cur rently being rebuilt in preparation of its re opening after being closed in 1988. Respess said the speedway will host the Auto mobile Racing Club of America's Permatex Su- E ercar Series for a 500 kilometer race on Septem- er 22. The Automobile Racing Club of America cars are similar to the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing stock cars except they have big ger engines, bigger tires, and don't use carbe- reutor restrictor plates, Respess said. The September race will be the first stock car race at the speedway since 1981 and the first time the Automobile Racing Club of America has raced at the track since 1972. In addition to the stock car race, the Texas In ternational Driver's Association will also partici pate the September 21-22 weeekend, Respess said. He said that they will run their Pro Sedan series on Saturday and the Late Model cars will race on Sunday as a preliminary to the stock cars. The Pro Sedans and Late Models participated in the last major race at Texas World Speedway, the Texas Race of Champions in 1988. The Pro Sedans and Late Model cars will run a combina tion of the oval and the road course, while the stock cars will use the two-mile oval. The speedway will officially open the week end of July 6-7 with Sports Car Club of America races including a three-hour World Challenge race for production-based sports cars, Respess said. The World Challenge cars include Lotus Esprit Turbos, Nissan 300ZXs, and Corvettes. Respess said the weekend will also feature the American City Racing League, a series for two-liter sports racing cars, and the Shellzone Racetruck series for mini-pickups. The track will also host an international mo torcycle race August 9-11. Respess said that these and other races will be annual or semi-annual events. "We haven't entered into any short-term con tracts," Respess said. d< 10 ans, don Kat ofFortu: “Da and Mid ‘Til hesharei get film i Boggs survives traffic accident Slocum names new wide receiver's coach From Staff and Wire Reports Tennessee WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) — Dazed and hurting while stretched out on the ground, Wade Boggs looked up at his wife and asked, "Am I still al ive?" The Boston Red Sox' five-time American League batting cham pion told Monday of his "pretty dramatic experience" Saturday night when he fell out of moving pickup truck driven by his wife, Debbie. Boggs, whose mother was killed in a traffic accident in 1986, escaped with minor injuries treated first by his wife and then by Red Sox trainer Charlie Moss on Sunday. A&M head coach R.C. Slocum completed his coaching staff Monday naming David Culley the wide receivers coach. Culley was the offensive coor dinator at University of Texas-El Paso the past ight two seasons, coached wide receivers last season and run ning backs in 1989. Prior to his stint at UTEP, Culley served four years as the quarterback coach for Southwestern Loui- vn Mi mm coached at Middle State and Vanderbilt. Slocum said Culley's exposure to different schemes will fit rij into the A&M program. "(Culley) has been in a num ber of different offenses and has worked in some good pro grams," Slocum said. "We're de lighted to add his experience to our staff." siana. Before taking the job at USL, he was the receiver coach for one year at Western Kentucky and Tennesse-Chattanooga. He also Culley earned his bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt in 1977 and was a graduate assistant at Ausin Peay before returning to his alma mater for his first job. Culley and his wife Carolyn have 16-year-old son named Monty and a five-month-old named J.C. With A&M's staff complete, the Aggies will begin spring drills Monday, April 1.
