A&M tracksters place well in CSR
Young runners provide spark
By Steve O'Brien
The Battalion
If Saturday's performance is
s pi
any indication, the Texas A&M
track team has a bright future.
Individual performances from
young A&M tracksters marked
the College Station Relays this
weekend at the Frank Anderson
Track and Field Complex.
Leading the Aggies were
freshman javelin thrower Amy
Pratt and sophomore hurdler
Rick Smith.
Pratt won the women's javelin
with a school-record throw of
152 feet, 4 inches and freshman
Amy Paulsen placed third in the
event with a toss of 136-2. Pratt's
record setting throw qualifies
her for the NCAA champion
ships.
In the men's division. Smith
came in second place in the 400-
meter hurdles behind Baylor's
Kevin Walker with a time of
51.66 seconds. Walker's winning
time was 51.38.
Smith's time was a personal
best.
"I was hoping I'd run a 51 this
week," Smith said. "We've been
off for three weeks with rain-
outs. This makes it a lot more
fun."
A&M head coach Ted Nelson
was happy with the performance
of his young athletes.
"We got a lot of young guys a
lot of experience today," Nelson
said. "We got disqualified in the
4x100 relay. They haven't run to
gether this year, but I thought
they ran well."
Also for the men, senior Kary
Vincent placed second in the 100
meter dash with a time of 10.54
behind Ron Clark (10.44) of Ste
phen F. Austin.
A&M sophomore Mike Miller
won the 800 meter with a time of
1:52.80. Mike Hawk of Stephen
F. Austin placed second with a
time of 1:53.37.
Aggie junior Ricky Barker
qualified tor the NCAA's with a
victory in the decathlon.
And A&M freshman Lee Pool
won the high jump with a leap of
7-0 3 /4.
Other second-place finishers
for the A&M men were Danny
Signorelli in the pole vault (16-9
1/2), Steve Collier in the 400 me
ter hurdles (51.66) and Nic Pol-
land in the 110 meter hurdles
(14.08).
For the women, Gwen Buck
won the high jump event with a
leap of 5-8 and Sandra Hines of
A&M came in second behind
Buck with a jump of 5-8.
In the 5000, A&M's Melissa
Weaver came in first with a time
of 17:15.45. Helen O'Sullivan of
Angelo State came in second at
18:06.19
Lady Aggie Michelle Byrne
placed second in the 3200 with a
time of 9:57.77.
Also placing second for A&M
were Kalleen Madden in the 100
meter hurdles (14.48) and Kasan-
dra McDaniel in the 400 meter
dash (56.19).
The women's 4x100 relay took
first place and the 4x400 team
placed second.
The Aggies travel to South
west Louisiana this week for a
meet and won't return home un
til April 13 for the Aggie Invita
tional.
