poor free throw shooting, making
only nine of 20, including seven of
the last nine.
The stage was set for Houston to
salvage the embarrassment of losing
to the conference’s ninth-place team.
Including Ricks’ production,
A&M received an all-around effort
from each of its starters.
Lewis was a perfect six-of-six from
the field en route to 14 points and
five rebounds. Anderson also
E itched in 14 while hauling in seven
oards.
Lynn Suber, the only other senior
on the A&M team, equaled Ricks’
point total, hitting three shots from
the three-point range.
It was Thompson, however, who
led the Ags in scoring for the sev
enth time in 10 games. Thompson
contributed 17 points, handed out
six assists, and was second on the
team with five boards.
Turning in perhaps his best per
formance of the season was reserve
center Chris Finley. Playing in 13
quality minutes, Finley scored three
points, grabbed four rebounds and
was instrumental in limiting the se
nior front-line duo of Alvaro Tehe
ran and Darrell Mickens to a total of
11 points and six rebounds.

Texas spoils Hogs’
bid for perfect SWC
AUSTIN (AP) — Benford Wil
liams scored 22 points and Joey
Wright and Locksley Collie each
added 19 Sunday as Texas defeated
No. 3 Arkansas in a disappointing fi
nale for the Razorbacks as they leave
the Southwest Conference.
Texas fans chanted “SEC, SEC”
with 1:44 to play as Texas (20-7)
built its lead to 14 points over Ar
kansas (28-3), which moves next sea
son to the Southeastern Conference.
Arkansas, which already has
clinched its third straight SWC bas
ketball championship, was shooting
for a 16-0 conference finish.
Texas, 13-3 in the SWC, gained its
third consecutive 20-game season,
which is a school record.
Texas trailed 55-45 at halftime af
ter Arkansas followed a timeout for
national television with a 16-6 run,
capped by Arlyn Bowers’ 3-pointer
that quieted the sellout crowd of
16,231.
Arkansas’ lead grew to 14 at 61-47
with 17:39 to go in the game but
Texas went ahead to stay, 73-72, at
the 9:46 mark.
The Texas surge came as Arkan
sas, which swished eight of 10 3-
pointers in the first half, lost its
shooting touch, and Longhorn re
bounding prevented second shots.
Perhaps the most spectacular of
numerous highlight plays came
when Guillermo “Panama” Myers of
Texas leaped high and guided a tea
mmate’s shot into the basket for an
84-76 lead.
Williams, who led all scorers at the
half with 16 points, was whistled for
his third and fourth fouls within 13
seconds with just over 16 minutes to
play and fouled out with 2:22 left.
He played only 23 minutes.
Arkansas’ Todd Day and Oliver
Miller were in foul trouble, picking
up four, but Day was in for 33 min
utes, Miller 36.
Texas had 26 turnovers to 18 for
Arkansas but outshot the Razor-
backs 58.5 percent to 38.8 percent
and had 45 rebounds to 33 for Ar
kansas.
Arkansas was only one for 12 on
3-point attempts in the second half.

(Tech) off the plate,” Hutchins said,
“They didn’t want to dig in. So I
could basically throw anything and
get ground balls.”
Hutchins forced nine ground ball
outs from the Bulldogs.
Senior reliever Steve Hughes
picked up the final out for his sec
ond save.
A&M’s efforts were fueled in
Game 2 after a second-inning con
flict between Hutchins and Tech
first-baseman Greg Kahmann.
The two exchanged some heated
words as Kahmann walked to first
base after he was gunned down in a
double play.
After umpires settled things
down, play resumed as usual, but the
Aggies were a different team.
“It (the exchange) just kind of
came about, it wasn’t my real inten
tion,” Hutchins said. “But when it
happened it really helped out,
think.
“I really got into the game after
that happened. It pumped me up
and it pumped the whole team up.”

Patrick, 24, was in charge after
winning the first set but John called
on his experience and an array of
shots to square the match.
Patrick, ranked 51st in the world
to John’s 19th, had another chance
in the third set when he took advan

John’s service to lead 2-0.
John used passing shots to break
back in the third game, however,
held serve to even the match and
took the lead with another break in
the fifth game.
John put the title away when, on
match point, he converted Patrick’s
service return into a passing shot.
John got his 77 th career tourna

and three Wimbledon titles among
his achievements, hadn’t won a
North American tournament since
the GTE Championships at India

The McEnroes weren’t enthusias

INGELWOOD, Calif (AP) — The
Houston Rockets took it to the Los

points in the third quarter and
added 10 more during a fourth-pe

tries this season.
Vlade Divac scored 23 points and
James Worthy added 21 for the
Lakers, who lost for only the fifth
time in 28 games, the second time in
18 games at home and slipped 2Vs

Akeem Olajuwon came off the
bench for the second time since re
turning from a fractured eye socket
that kept him out for 25 games and
scored 13 points, including a key 20-
foot jumper to beat the 24-second
dock and restore Houston’s lead to
eight points with 2:26 left.
Sam Perkins returned to the Los
Angeles lineup after missing sh
games with a broken toe on his left
foot and contributed six points and
four rebounds.
