HOURS
if you really need that extra two
hours studying or if you decide to
wimp out and watch it on television.
The Aggies have been successful this
year in taking the opposition out of
its normal game plan.
They slow down the tempo, but
not the excitement. They did it to
Oklahoma, Texas and Houston and
have been in each of those games
right to the very end.
Now, to think that A&M could ac
tually beat the Razorbacks would be
like saying a small NAIA college by
the name of Chaminade could
topple a No. 1 and Ralph Sampson-
led Virginia team, so we won’t even
entertain the thought.
But getting back to the point, if we
honesdy want a recognized basket
ball program, it’s got to start with fan
support.
It’s going to look awfully funny in
three or four years with about 2,000
people in that big, new coliseum to
watch a basketball game. Even more
sad, would be when the Ice Capades
came to town and outdrew our
NCAA Division-I basketball team.
In most sports, athletes that trans
fer from one school to another have
to sit out a year before regaining
their eligibility.
But, in NCAA baseball, athletes
that wish to transfer must obtain a
release of their scholarship and the
approval of both coaches to transfer
without losing eligibility.
Hickey said that he was able to
gain a release from the OU after five
weeks of trying.
One of Hickey’s coaches in sum
mer baseball told him that A&M
might be interested in him.
“They had a great reputation and
a great tradition,” he said. “I feel un
lucky that I had to switch universi
ties, but I am lucky I got the oppor
tunity to play for two Division I
schools.”
Hickey said he knew he was going
to A&M two weeks before the fall se
mester began.
Once at A&M, Hickey said he no
ticed the academics were much
tougher and his teammates ap
proach to the game was different.
“The attitude of the players is a lot
better than at Oklahoma,” Hickey
said. “At OU, it is a lot more laid
back.
“It took me a while to adapt to it.”
Now that he has had a chance to
play at Olsen Field, Hickey has no
ticed than the fans are a lot differ
ent.
“I’ve never played in front of fans
that rag like that,” he said. “The fans
make it great.”
Hickey did not have much of a
chance to impress the A&M coach
ing staff in the fall because he broke
his index finger the second week of
practice.
But, he did not let the injury dis
courage him.
“It did not depress me at all,” he
said. “I was glad I broke the finger in
the fall instead of in the spring.”
Now, the only thing Hickey is
thinking about is this weekend’s se
ries at LSU.
“I am looking forward to it be
cause it is going to be exciting,” he
said. “Not many teams get to play
the No. 1 team in the nation.”
