Davis offered his opinion.
The coach said Scott lied about
the allegations so as to force proba
tion on A&M’s program, thus di
vorcing the player from his obliga
tion here ana allow him to move on.
Sounds clever.
Now an investigation hangs over
the school and its basketball pro
gram like a heavy storm cloud.
all, Davis has been walking
around with the world on his shoul
ders. The world being his future as a
college coach.
Scott has since come out with nu-
j merous other stories since his first.
He said the student body at A&M
supports racism. An interesting
judgment, but not grounds for cre
ating even more trouble.
Scott continued to express his
| disheartedness with the school in the
following weeks.
Then came the recanting of his
previous statements, just adding in
sult to injury.
Scott returned to A&M a week
late for the beginning of the spring
semester.
Was he delayed by a vacation that
ran long? Maybe he was overseas on
business. Or maybe he hit nothing
^ but red lights on his way here.
Probably none of the above.
If I were Tony Scott I wouldn’t
have wanted to come back either.
Scott knew darn well he wouldn’t
; be welcomed back with open arms.
He knows how many popularity con
tests he is capable of winning now at
A&M.
But Scott has had the courage to
come back, which is admirable to say
the most.
The fact of the matter is Scott
made the wrong decision a long time
ago when he decided to come to Ag-
gieland. And as the saying goes, you
never stop paying for your mistakes.
Those mistakes and wrong deci
sions have followed one after an
other for the tall, wiry player who
alone might have had the potential
to put the A&M basketball program
on the map.
Funny how quickly things change.
Scott was at the Aggies’ last home
game against Texas. He was sitting
behind the A&M bench like he had
many times before all the trouble
started. Your heart would go out to
that guy, who was sitting there al
most motionless, wondering what
people around him were saying.
5 Scott is reportedly in the process
of withdrawing from school. Maybe
it’s best for him, and for the Univer-
iity.
Even more funny is the fact that
low I’m sitting here motionless,
ihinking of what could have been.
Lady Ags
from page 7
She is the replacement for for
ward Dena Russo, who abruptly
ended her collegiate career after a
long battle with her knees.
Janak, who ended with 10 points
and four rebounds, gathered two
key rebounds down the stretch that
enabled the Lady Ags to hold on for
victory.
“It inspired me to fill her (Russo’s)
shoes,” Janak said. “To ask someone
to do that would be a chore. How
ever, it just inspires me more to do
better.”
Coach Hickey was impressed with
the Lady Ags performance despite
the SMU comeback, and she cred
ited almost everyone with playing an
equal part in the victory.
She added that a defensive lapse
may have been the cause of the Lady
Ags’ slight demise in the second half.
“We may have extended our de
fense a little too early,” Hickey said.
“We tried to start in that full-court
man press and we may have been
better off just starting with a half
court man press.”
Detmer expects to come
back at full strength
FORT WORTH (AP) — Ty
Detmer, the Brigham Young
University quarterback who sepa
rated both
shoulders dur
ing a 55-13
Holiday Bowl
loss to Texas
A&M, said
Monday he
will be in top
condition for
the start of the
1991 season.
Detmer said
he will miss
spring training, but will be at full
speed for the Cougars’ season
opener Aug. 29 in the Pigskin
Classic against Florida State.
The Heisman Trophy winner
was in Fort Worth to receive the
Davey O’Brien Award as the na
tion’s top collegiate quarterback.
“I should be ready just after
the spring. I’m going to throw all
summer, and I’ll be ready when
the season starts. Our last two
losses to Hawaii and A&M left a
bad taste in my mouth,” he said.
BYU coach Lavell Edwards,
who was on hand for the Davey
O’Brien ceremony, said he
doesn’t think Detmer’s missing
spring practice will hurt the Cou
gars next year.
“We just made up our mind
not to use him this spring, and
we’ll work in our younger play
ers,” Edwards said. “It was un
usual that Ty separated both
shoulders in the same game, but
we believe he will bounce back
and be OK.”
Detmer, winner of the Heis
man Trophy last season, has bro
ken 42 NCAA passing records
and tied 5.
