Why not knock down that missile over enemy territory?” Quayle asked a cheering group of about 3,000 schoolchildren, soldiers and military dependents. The SDI, also known as “Star Wars,” is a controversial space-based weapons system that is still in re search and development stages. Government officials hope it could eventually knock missiles out of the sky. Star Wars’ During his two-hour stop in El Paso, Quayle toured the Patriot mis sile training school and gave a 30- minute speech, during which he was interrupted numerous times by the cheers of the crowd. He also took a two-mile run with troops who are wearing “Scud-bus- ter” T-shirts. Quayle had visited members of the 3rd Armored Cavalry in a New Year’s Eve trip to Saudi Arabia. The 3rd Armored is based at Fort Bliss. Quayle, on a three-day jaunt to Southwestern military installations, departed for California, where he was scheduled to visit Camp Pendle ton and later Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix Thursday and Friday. He also will tour a Tomahawk mis sile plant in San Diego. A STIMULATING EXPERIENCE. (If you’ve never 4711 ’d, come to JCPenney and learn how. Madlsot CANYON (AP) — West Texas State University officials believe the school’s affiliation with the Texas A&M University System has helped increase student enrollment this se- spring the coi mester. Enrollment at West Texas for this year’s spring term is 5,723, which is a 5.8 percent increase over last spring’s count of 5,409, said Dana Olmstead, a university spokeswo man. The figures represent the largest enrollment since 1986, when count was 5,746 students, she said. “I think the increases we have ex perienced are reflective of the en thusiasm generated from our affilia tion with the Texas A&M University System,” said Steve Gamble, West Texas State vice president for aca demic affairs. West Texas State joined the A&M system on Sept. 1, 1990.
