I blanked out. I don’t know what it was. I just wasn’t thinking,” said Player, who had Nicklaus on the rocks but let him get away. “A tough way to go out,” said Player, who, along with Chi Chi Rodriguez, was shut out dur ing this two-day, made-for-television event. “Two years in a row I played very well — and didn’t make a cent,” Player said. Nicklaus, on the other hand, turned his escape on the second playoff hole and a 35-40-foot eagle putt on the third into a $310,000 payoff, $285,000 of it coming on the 21st hole of play on the Francis H. Brown course at the Mauna Lani Resort. “By far the biggest payday I’ve ever had,” said Nicklaus, holder of a record 18 major profes sional championships. The big check compares, for example, with the $113,285 he collected as the PGA Tour’s leading money winner in 1964. It was larger, in fact, than his season total in seven of the eight years he led the tour in winnings. Lee Trevino won $125,000 and Arnold Palmer $15,000, both from Saturday’s first nine holes. Nicklaus won all the money that was up for grabs on Sunday. It all was pocketed on that dramatic eagle putt, but the event turned as he scrambled for par on the second extra hole, the par-5 18th. With Palmer, Trevino and Rodriguez elimi nated, it was a head-to-head struggle between Nicklaus and his old friend and golfing foe, Player. Nicklaus, trying to stay away from a bunker on the left, hit into the lava rocks on the right. “When he got it into the rocks,” Player said, “I thought, ‘I can win it with a (par) 5,’ “And I played it for a 5. That was my mistake,” he said, and shook his head. “I wasn’t thinking right.” Player got the 5 he was playing for, but so did Nicklaus. They went back to the tee on the par-5 10th for the third playoff hole. Both drove into the fairway and went for the green with their second shots. Player reached the front fringe with a fairway wood and Nicklaus hit a 2-iron to the back left fringe. Player missed his long eagle putt to the right. As Nicklaus hit his putt, he began yelping, “It’s going! It’s going!” and when it took the break and began to fall, he said, “It’s in!” “It seemed either we all made the putts, or none of us made the putts,” Nicklaus said. Palmer, 61, the defending champion, played his 18 holes in 6-under-par 66. He birdied three of the first four holes Sunday, yet won nothing at all. Trevino also had a 66 while Nicklaus was eight under for the 12 holes he played on Sunday. I’m flying, but the boat’s (AP) — Tex Schramm, the former Dallas Cowboys president and gen eral manager, never played or coached in the NFL. But he was in fluential enough to earn a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Schramm was elected Saturday along with former Texas Longhorn and Houston Oiler running back Earl Campbell during the annual meeting of the selection committee. They were joined by John Hannah, Jan Stenerud and Stan Jones. They will be inducted July 27 in Canton. Ohio. Schramm presided over the Cow- Henke’s putt wins tournament PHOENIX (AP) — Nolan Henke rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday, ending a back-nine collapse and giving him a one-stroke victory over Curtis Strange, Tom Watson and Gil Mor gan in the Phoenix Open. Henke, whose only previous vic tory in three years on the PGA Tour was in last year’s B.C. Open, finished with an even-par 71 and a 16-under total of 268. The victory was worth $180,000, more than half of what the 26-year- old Henke earned last season. Morgan and Strange both bo geyed the 18th hole to fall to 15 un der with Watson, winner of 32 tour events in 21 years but winless since the 1987 Nabisco Championship. Watson became the early club house leader with a 65 featuring birdies on five of the last six holes. Morgan shot a 66 and Strange a 67 on the 6,992-yard TPC course. Henke, who led from the second round and started the day with a four-stroke lead over Robert Wrenn, made the turn at 17 under and then birdied the 10th hole for a three-shot lead over Strange. But Henke bogeyed the par-5 13th, the par-5 15th and the par-3 16th to fall to 15 under. Strange shot a 4-under 31 on the front nine to make the turn at 15 under. He birdied Nos. 12 and 13 before finding a bunker on the 15th hole and winding up with a bogey. Morgan, six strokes back of Henke after three rounds, had an eagle on the 13th hole to go 14 un der and then birdied the 15th and 17th. He went bunker to bunker on No. 18, however, and two-putted for bogey. Henke’s tee shot on 18 landed 171 yards from the green. He used a 7-iron to get to 18 feet and rolled in his birdie putt from the left out side lip of the cup. boys for 29 years, including 20 con secutive winning seasons, 18 playoff appearances and five trips to the Su per Bowl. He, along with Kansas City Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt, was the architect of the AFL-NFL merger and was chiefly responsible for innovations such as microphones on officials, the 30-second clock be tween plays, instant replay and the concept of wild-card playoff teams. He also was chairman of the NFL’s competition committee, per haps the league’s most prestigious job aside from commissioner, for 23 years. TANK M‘ NAMAUA anchored. “I’m sure you know how much this means to me,” he told The Dal las Morning News. “Down deep, I didn’t think I was going to get in. I didn’t think it would come true. Schramm left the Cowboys in 1988 after new owner Jerry Jones took over and fired coach Tom Landry, who preceded Schramm into the Hall by one year. He said that within two minutes of being informed by telephone of his election, former commissioner Pete Rozelle drove up to the boat. “He came on board, but didn’t know what had happened. Of course he was overjoyed, so he has spent the day here with me,” Schramm said. Campbell played just eight NFL seasons, 6Vi with the Houston Oilers and IVs with the New Orleans Saints. He ranks 10th in all-time rushing yardage with 9,407 yards. “I thought that only eight years, they’d try to give it to an older guy before me,” Campbell said. “I had no idea that I’d be chosen in my first year.” by Jeff Millar & Bill Hinds i »w,'ttey, bckha it, “ \ ACk \ 11/AIT cV-TC?
