I To participate, students must be presently enrolled and have a valid | student ID. 1 Faculty members and staff can purchase recreation passes for $10 a a year. Passes for their families are 1 $20 a year. A&M facilities are less expensive j than other local outfits, says Judy | Steffes, assistant director of recre- 1 ational sports. Fitness classes are offered at seve- | ral levels, from beginning to ad- ] vanced, and require a registration j fee. Classes are offered several times | aweek throughout the semester. Those with a competitive nature I can participate in intramural sports. More than 70 competitive tourna- I ments are conducted in a variety of j sports at levels for the serious to the I recreational competitor, Steffes says. Participants must comply with the 1 rules of eligibility available at the I recreational sports office in i59 Read Building oehind Kyle Field. Adventurers can go backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, skiing and take trips offered by TAMU Outdoors. Trips are planned periodically throughout the semester. Each ex cursion generally has a registration fee to cover the cost of equipment, transportation and guides. Athletic equipment also is avail able for checkout, rental and pur chase. Stop watches, megaphones, rackets, balls and even tug-of-war ropes can be checked out at windows in the Read Building or DeWare Fieldhouse. DeWare Fieldhouse courts are open from noon to 1 p.m. and 5 to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday. The courts are available from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sun- , day. Courts are available hourly and can be reserved one day in advance. Read Building and G. Rollie White Coliseum courts also can be reserved. They are open from 6 to 8 a.m., noon to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to midnight Monday through Friday. The DeWare weight room is avail able on a first-come, first-serve basis. It is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 8 p.m. Satur day and Sunday. Tennis courts are open on a first- come, first-serve basis from 5 p.m. to midnight Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to midnight on weekends. The driving range, which cannot be reserved, also is available from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through T hurs day, noon to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Romeo M. Villarreal was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury on eight counts in connection with al leged irregularities at El Tule Dav Care Center in Edinburg. Villarreal directed the city-operated center from 1979 to 1987. He is accused of recruiting ineli gible, non-indigent families and coaching them to falsify financial ap plication forms, Assistant U.S. Attor ney Jack Wolfe said. Wolfe said falsified applications resulted in the loss of about $250,000 in state funding. “I feel I didn’t do anything wrong,” Villarreal said. “There was no gain for me, monetarily or in any way.” He said parents may have pro vided false information that the day care staff did not know about. Villar real faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count. Federal charges were filed be cause the funding in question origi nated from the U.S. Departmenl of Health and Human Services.
