Business Smoke cloud gives rise to collision MEXICO CITY (AP) — A big cloud of smoke from burning weed Fields nearby cut out visibility on the North Highway causing a multiple rear-end collision. Four people were killed and 21 were seriously injured, the Federal Highway Police said Sunday. A police news release said the collision involving at least seven vehicles occurred at around 5 a.m. Saturday about 121 miles north of the capital on the highway to Queretaro. Two passenger buses, a tank truck loaded with ammonia and another truck were among the vehicles involved in the collision, the news release said. The news release also said that one bus driver was among those killed. The other victims, a woman and two men, were not immediately identified. Clouds of smoke from the fields burning nearby mixed with early morning haze to reduce visibility to zero, the news release said. It is common for farmers and ranchers in Mexico to set fields ablaze to burn away the previous season’s weeds. Prison program Clemens inmates assist needy from behind bars JONES CREEK (AP) — An elite group of Clemens Prison inmates is participating in a unique program to assist the needy from behind bars. Clemens is operating the last existing scouting post in a Texas prison and perhaps the only one in the nation, said Bill Ridge, national law enforcement Exploring Scout di rector. “Most people think it (the post) is a front or something used to get around the other rules, so we have to fight tooth and nail to prove our selves ... and keep our (post) squeaky clean,” said troop management sec retary and inmate Joey Bishop. “They’d shut us down in a heart beat if we messed up.” Explorer Scout Post 300 was char tered in May 1971 as a human rela tions post at the Clemens Unit to help the community. The prison post is a chartered member of the Boy Scouts of America, pays annual re-chartering dues and must remain in good standing with the national organization. The group helps the needy throughout Brazoria County by act ing as a charitable organization while holding annual field days and other events for the inmates. The Clemens post raises income by selling candy bars and taking graphs of inmates, their friends and family members. They are sold on weekends and during visitation. Bishop, a 35-year-old Houston man serving a 35-year sentence for aggravated robbery, said being a club member is an incentive for in mates to better themselves. “It’s the only area, other than school or college, where you can have personal achievement (in , prison) and it’s the first time for a lot of the members to achieve some thing where they can make others feel good too,” he said. The post has operated intermit tently since its inception and was last reinstated in 1988. “I have worked very hard to keep that post there and it has not been easy,” scouting executive joe Yoke said. Yoke said creation of the Clemens scouting post in the early 1970s prompted other prisons to develop similar inmate organizations. He said the program came under fire in the 1980s when the Texas prison system created laws prohibit ing overtime pay to its employees while requiring overtime pay for those working with inmate organiza tions.
