Student follows code, cuts hair
Parents say policy
violates boys’ rights
LUBBOCK (AP) — Fifth-grader
Michael Buckberry, whose mother
sued the Lubbock Independent
School District to modify its dress
code restricting boys’ hair length, cut
his hair under protest to conform
with school policy.
Michael, a student at Roscoe Wil
son Elementary, waged a battle for
three months against the LISD, re
fusing to cut a four-inch lock of hair,
called a tail, which violates the dis
trict’s new dress code.
But Kathy Buckberry, the boy’s
mother, said she had her sou’s locks
clipped to keep him from being pun
ished in “in-school suspension,” a
room where student delinquents are
isolated during school hours.
“The decision to cut Michael’s
hair was made under protest,” said
Buckberry. “We are still very much
opposed to the LISD’s policy.”
Michael returned to classes Mon
day without his tail.
“I am happy to be back at school,
but I am sad I cut my hair,” Michael
said Monday. “I would be happy if
we won the case and I could grow
my tail back.”
Buckberry and the parents of
Lubbock High School sophomore
Yacatico Kelley, sued the LISD to
modify the hair policy, which pro
hibits boys from wearing longer than
shoulder-length hair, pony tails,
tails, braids or designs in their hair.
The parents claim the dress code
violates the Texas Equal Rights
Amendment because the policy does
not restrict girls’ hair length.
District Judge Bradley Under
wood ruled in favor of the school
district last month.
The boys’ parents are considering
an appeal.
