Aggies challenged to give more blood By JAMES M. LOVE Of The Battalion Staff To bleed or not to bleed, that is the question the Wadley Blood Cen ter is asking Aggies this week. The Aggie Blood Committee, a cooperation between service frater nities Alpha Phi Omega and Omega Phi Alpha, Student Government and the blood center, is encouraging stu dents to donate blood during this week’s drive. Students can donate today through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Academic Plaza, Sbisa, and by the Blocker Building; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Commons Lobby; and 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Medical Sciences Library. Mark Longworth, Aggie Blood Committee chairman, says the group expects to receive about 2,000 pints of blood during the drive. “Last year, we pulled about 1,900 pints, and that was after many peo ple had just been immunized for the measles and were not allowed to do nate,” he says. “We’re expecting a much bigger turnout this year.” Texas A&M once again has been challenged by the University of Ar kansas to see which can get more stu dents to donate blood. A&M has not won the Southwest Conference blood-drive competition in the last five years. “The University of North Texas collected over 2,700 pints, and we collected only about 1,600,” Long- worth says. “They have about half the student body we do at A&M, too.” “Last year, we lost to Arkansas by only seven pints of blood. We’re doing pretty bad. We can do better than this.” The entire donation process takes about 30 minutes, and the actual draw time is about five minutes. The process includes a mini-physical with cholesterol count, HIV test and he patitis check. Donators receive a free T-shirt and coupons from a local restaurant. Blood collected by the center will be serviced and tested in Dallas. The blood then is distributed to major hospitals in the area. One pint of blood will help ap proximately three people after it is separated into red cells, plasma and platelets. Each unit of blood donated by A&M students earns the Aggie Blood Club a credit, which is guar anteed to be replaced by Wadley if any A&M student or former student needs blood. The Wadley Blood Center has been coming to A&M since 1959, and has collected more than 62,000 pints of blood from participants at the University. He said restaurants with scores in the 70s or low 80s usually have serious violations in the health report. Scores can be misleading, Jefferson said, because restaurants can get the same score by having several minor vio lations or a few major violations. He said the minor violations can be corrected during the inspection. ss it! The editorial staff resem very effort to maintain lh/ tied will be printed.
